If you're uninsured and on the brink of death, that's apparently a laughing matter to some audience members at last night's tea party Republican presidential debate.
Texas Rep. Ron Paul, a doctor, was asked a hypothetical question by CNN host Wolf Blitzer about how society should respond if a healthy 30-year-old man who decided against buying health insurance suddenly goes into a coma and requires intensive care for six months. Paul--a fierce limited-government advocate-- said it shouldn't be the government's responsibility. "That's what freedom is all about, taking your own risks," Paul said and was drowned out by audience applause as he added, "this whole idea that you have to prepare to take care of everybody "
"Are you saying that society should just let him die?" Blitzer pressed Paul. And that's when the audience got involved.
Several loud cheers of "yeah!" followed by laughter could be heard in the Expo Hall at the Florida State Fairgrounds in response to Blitzer's question.
You can watch the exchange below via CNN-- the clip begins at the 23:30 mark:

Paul disagreed with the audience on that front. "No," he responded, noting he practiced medicine before Medicaid when churches took care of medical costs--a comment that drew wide audience applause. "We never turned anybody away from the hospital."

Complete nonsense. We only cheer when we kill babies. /s!
What happens when you step in front of a bus? Should you face those consequences?
The greatest irony is that socialized medicine ends up with the govt letting people die.
The question is what’s so funny.
And where was the reporting on the cheers that Carson and Waters when they were making outrageous statements????...frickin libtard dirtbags..
Damn straight!
Society is different than government.
If society wants to help the guy out via charity or whatever that is one thing and historically in the US, it is individuals and groups that stepped up.
I do not favor Ron Paul but in this case I agree, it is not the governement’s responsibility. His choice to not buy insurance is what liberty is all about.
CNN forgot killing kittens, frying puppies alive and killing unicorns!
While your at it kill all the baby seals also. Oh and don’t forget the children. /s
I’m almost certain it was one of Wrong Paul’s own supporters doing the cheering...
What if the government saved the guy’s life and then he went on to rape and murder Mike Dukakis’ wife, could we kill him then?
The Obama Death Chats ...

Gotta love America. Where people can be forced to pay into social security only to have congress treat it like their personal piggy bank. Where 401k plans are wiped out overnight and congress rushes to rescue the banks with taxpayer money.
That’s all just fine but when someone voices a factual statement of personal responsibility, its met with gasps of horror.
Those who chose poorly in the past, and suffered the consequences, served the noble purpose of warning others.
They were probably laughing at the stupidity of the question and the absolutely bizarre thought process that prompted it.
I thought Ron Paul’s answer was BRILLIANT
He was a doctor before the current laws mandating that government pay for everything, and no one was left dying on the streets. Churches and private organization never turned anyone away.
The questioner assumes only The Government can help him, and Paul blew that out of the water.
THIS SHOULD BE THE STANDARD RESPONSE when ever a libtard asks a question like this.
I, too, do not like Ron Paul's often off-the-wall ideas, but in this particular case, I agree that "freedom of choice" includes assuming the risks. If the entire question was "a 30 year old habitual drug user who decided to continue use, and so couldn't afford his habit AND health insurance, goes to an Emergency Room, as always, for his FREE care, with an overdose problem, and lapses into a coma, you say we should not treat him?"
"Better than the insurance companies doing the same thing!"
Honest-to-God this was the liberal response to this argument.
