Correct. The Marine Corps stands alone among the service branches in it’s teaching both it’s History and Customs of the Service to new recruits in Boot Camp.

It is drummed into you that “ex” is an unexceptable qualifier when referring to non active/retired duty Marines. “Former Marine’ is the correct term.....

Marines have always made an exception to this when talking about people like John Murtha, whose actions in civilian life have brought discredit to the Corps we all love so much. To a Marine this is the ultimate insult.
