American flag confiscated from 7th-grade student

DOVER, N.H. (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - Old Glory hangs proudly in the hallway at Dover Middle school where the pledge of allegiance is recited every morning. But there was a breach in school policy when a 7th grader, who is also autistic, brought his flag to school.

The flag was taken away because school officials said it could be used as a weapon.

I’ll admit it: When I first say the headline, I thought the reason would be that the flag would “offend” someone.

But if the kid wrapped it up and wore it like a diaper, he would be heralded as a clever and imaginative boy with lots of potential.

Like they do in some prisons, lets bolt or weld everything to the floor. Then we can hand out grease pens and circles of paper so no one gets hurt.

I have a simple solution. Tie a small flag to a pencil.

If a flag is a potential weapon, then shirts, pants, & shoes are also potential weapons, & should be banned. Certainly pens & pencils are pointy & dangerous objects. A crayon could be used to stab someone in the eye. Books are known deadly weapons.

Come to think of it, given the recent bad behavior of WI teachers, perhaps teachers are too dangerous to allow into the classroom.

If we ever return to sanity, we will realize that virtually all inanimate objects can be used as a weapon. Therefore, banning weapons is not the solution. Banning, arresting, jailing, & executing dangerous people is the only practical way to minimize violence. Penalties for violent perps should be swift, sure, & extremely harsh.

My American Legion post has a “Flags, for First Graders program”.

We go to schools on Veterans Day, and give a flag and Patriotic Brochure to all First Grade kids.

Haven’t lost a kid yet.
