I have a family member who used to attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Their teams were for many, many years nicknamed....the Indians (duh!)

When he went there the administration was in the early stages of caving. They ditched the Indian mascot and replaced it with a guy in a bear costume. The idea backfired though when they held a “Name the New Mascot” contest and the #1 leading vote getter was....Cherokee!

IUP has since made the cave complete and renamed all of their sports teams the Crimson Hawks.

Change it to “Early Americans whose immigration policies sucked.”

I assume if they drowned that proved they were not witches. Are witches offended by the name?

There ‘used’ to be a very logical explanation to the dunking.

If they drowned it proved they weren’t a witch, if they didn’t drown they burned them at the stake because they were a witch. (supposedly)

Just shows to go ya, if they ‘pick you out’ you be gone and just as dead.

How novel... wait, _I’m_ a “Native American”.
I was born here.

Likewise.

BUT to be PC shouldn’t we be calling the people of Peru, Ecuador, Argentina etc etc “Native Americans”????

It must make the PC Police rankle when ‘we’ refer to Americans as people being in the United States, when in fact, Canadians, Mexicans, Central and South Americans are being left off the ‘band wagon’?

Probably gave some idiot an idea here....<: <: <:

I am shocked that a high school would have such an offensive team name. Where do they get such ideas?

In honor of the alumnus who made the complaint, the new name should be the Whiners.

I used to have one of those Cleveland Indians caps with the Chief Wahoo logo on the front, back inthe ‘80s. I worked with a woman who came up to me and said: “Your hat offends me” Why? “Because it mocks my heritage” Up until this point I had no idea she had any Native American blood. And looking back, she probably was one of those folks who do have N.A. heritage, but consider themselves “spokesmen”. Heck, I’ve got Indian blood in me, but I just don’t CARE. I remember laughing at her for her ridiculous “offense” over a cartoon character.

I’ve never understood those who dedicate their lives to being delicate, nor do I defer to them. It’s entirely appropriate to be considerate of others, but not when the perpetually offended are using your compassion as a lever to exert control.

I personally just don’t understand the motives for the perpetually “offended” people. For entities like the Southern Poverty Law Center, it’s obvious: MONEY. Maybe publicity and getting your face on the evening news. But for others, I just don’t know. If there’s no financial incentive, why even waste the energy. And I REALLY don’t get the people who are professional cry-babies, who often aren’t even a member of the supposedly “offended” group. Lily-white liberals who don’t have a drop of Indian blood who squeal about mascots.

The name "Illinois" comes from a Native American word meaning "tribe of superior men."
