Rick Perry Flying High in Iowa
The Iowan Republican ^ | 09/17/11 | Jeff Patch

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa—Gov. Rick Perry (R-Texas) blitzed through Iowa Friday with the swagger of a rock star, elevating his high-octane campaign with a series of stage-managed campaign events.

As the only sitting governor pursuing the GOP nomination for president, Perry’s Texas-sized entourage and personality project an aura of authority that other candidates envy. His style, though, may risk alienating Iowans accustomed to lower key campaigning and more time for back-and-forth over issues.

For example, Perry traveled to campaign events throughout Iowa in a 22-seat Gulfstream IV jet owned by Wells Fargo Equipment Finance, Inc., a subsidiary of the banking conglomerate. The plane has ferried Perry since at least Sept. 12, when it left Austin, Texas for Tampa., Fla., where Perry participated in the CNN-Tea Party Express debate. Perry’s use of corporate jets, a perk most other candidates lack, allowed Perry to cram five public events into four days. But the propriety of jetting around the Hawkeye State for retail political events in a corporate jet could crimp Perry’s populist touch among fickle, frugal Iowans

What's wrong with flying commercial? Are politicians "better" than the rest of us?

For the Governor of the State of Texas, who has a security detail that covers logistics, protection, etc, I don't see that "flying commercial" is a realistic or practical option.

>>>I was reading a thread at DU yesterday, and some of them were referencing their presence on FR as trusted posters, and freepers. <<<

To make that claim, it begs a link to substantiate.... aka “Pics or it didn’t happen”.

Was it that she was just trying to draw attention to herself?

Yep! Promoting her Million Dollar TV time, her book (s), her lameass movie FOR THE moolah! I don’t blame her, doing right for her family by “making hay while the sun shines”.

Thanks for the clarification. As I said, he can fly around all he wants. It’s America! This is a spec of nothing compared to what we’re discovering about the sell out by politicians of the Taxpayers to Solyndra of half a billion dollars.

**************************

I think it would be difficult to book commercial for a ‘team’— he doesn’t travel alone.

With chartered flights they are more flexible with times, no layovers and they can get into airports that big commercial airlines don’t service. With several traveling as do in a campaign, it isn’t that much more expensive to charter—plus they can get work done in privacy as a group. It just makes good sense.

Here is a NETJETS link, if you read around it, it explains some of the advantages.
http://www.netjets.com/ABOUT_NETJETS/about_netjets.asp

Another link
“Commercial airlines only serve about 500 airports. There are more than 4,000 paved GA airports in the U.S., and that figure is increasing.”

“”Commercial airlines simply aren’t as dedicated to or interested in the business traveler, as they were 20 years ago,” he said. “GA is the way of the future for business travel. GA is a hassle-free, point-to-point, on demand, customized, secure, dependable and much more affordable option than most people imagine.”

I assume from your TAG that you are a Palin supporter? If she were to get the nomination, would you expect her to travel between campaign stops flying commercial? I sure as hell wouldn't. She would most likely travel the way most candidates do.

That brings up another point. Why do governors need a security detail? For that matter, why are courthouses sealed up like Fort Knox? What is so special about politicians and government workers that need preferential treatment?

Currently, no! The federal government is selling securities (borrowing) to cover any revenue shortfall in the SSTF. But, if reform is not done, then the imbalance will tip to insolvency down the road.

Please tell me you are not so clueless as to believe the SSTF represents actual assets. Because if you do, I can see why you would not think SS is a Ponzi scheme. And that kind of ignorance is dangerous - and on FR, very odd indeed. Just about all FReepers I have known are smart enough to realize just what the Trust Fund represents - a bunch of worthless IOUs.

Calling it a Ponzi scheme is demagogic and stupid.

It's far closer to the truth than your blather, and it got people talking about the subject - and I am not a Perry booster.

Palin had to cover his explanation in a better way. He's like a bull in china shop, huffin and puffin along with no concrete solutions.

Palin was wrong here (and I am a Palin supporter). We need more blunt talk from someone like Perry - and we also need folks like you to better understand what the SS Trust Fund represents - which is nothing.

“General aviation is one of the few manufacturing industries that provides a trade surplus for the United States and it supports more than 1.2 million jobs across the country. In Iowa alone, GA contributes $1.4 billion to the economy annually.”

The question is, what has Perry promised in return? This is a prime example of in your face cronyism.

And no, I don't envy Perry. Not in the least. But I do loathe him, mostly due to his cronyism associated with his politics. Admittedly, there are many other reasons as well.

>>> What’s wrong with flying commercial? Are politicians “better” than the rest of us? The obvious answer from the GOP Establishment Elites is yes, they are better than the rest of us.>>>

Wow: voila folks: class envy 101 on display. There is nothing wrong with flying commercial - except that I’m sure you resent folks who fly first class commercial too. Where does it stop? Why doesn’t he take Greyhound. No wait, he should thumb a ride.

And should they fly direct, or have connecting flights? Can you run a campaign or a company or anything large if you are always making connections in an airport?

Let me give you a little life reality lesson that you are sure to resent: people who run big operations, be they a state or a big company — or that give concerts or other performances that thousands of folks pay to see - have time that is more financially valuable than most folks. It just is.

This is why corporate jets even exist: for people who doing a cost benefit analysis understand that being able to travel on their schedule has a monetary value greater than the cost of a corporate jet. Most states, and they are all geographically smaller than texas, have a jet for their governors. On a certain financial level, it just makes sense.

Rick Perry fits that category. I don’t fly corporate jets. But I don’t resent those that do either. But I’ll tell you what, most liberals do.

The biggest fib he would have us believe is this...while he was a Democrat campaigning for Gore in 88, he now claims that he voted for Reagan.

Right, like some kind of "Reagan Democrat?" Obviously no such thing ever existed.
