Behind the poverty numbers: real lives, real pain
Charter News ^ | 9/19/2011 | DAVID CRARY

At a food pantry in a Chicago suburb, a 38-year-old mother of two breaks into tears.

She and her husband have been out of work for nearly two years. Their house and car are gone. So is their foothold in the middle class and, at times, their self-esteem.

"It's like there is no way out," says Kris Fallon.

She is trapped like so many others, destitute in the midst of America's abundance. Last week, the Census Bureau released new figures showing that nearly one in six Americans lives in poverty — a record 46.2 million people. The poverty rate, pegged at 15.1 percent, is the highest of any major industrialized nation, and many experts believe it could get worse before it abates.

The numbers are daunting — but they also can seem abstract and numbing without names and faces.

Associated Press reporters around the country went looking for the people behind the numbers. They were not hard to find.

There's Tim Cordova, laid off from his job as a manager at a McDonald's in New Mexico, and now living with his wife at a homeless shelter after a stretch where they slept in their Ford Focus.

There IS a way out. But there is no way that Obastard will allow it. It is LESS government regulations and intrusion and LOWER taxes. If Obastard and the Rats would allow it, there could be 500,000 jobs a month created in just a few months. And since they won't allow it and just call for MOR regulation and higher taxes and silently watch as the FDA uses machine guns to intimidate people as they gather contraband MILK and LEGALLY owned guitar fingerboards, this is THEIR FAULT.

Welcome to Obamaville where the government employees are fat and armed with machine guns and the people are forced to live in their cars.

I’m going to write something very naughty now: I’ll wager that nearly everyone mentioned in this article voted for Mr. Obama.

The cruelty rests of his shoulders. He is not making it possible for these folk to get back on their feet.

Shame on him, and may God help these folks who have run out of confidence. It is a horrible feeling.

When I was in Barbados, it looked to me like you could open a restaurant or food stand with just a grill and few ice chests. No paperwork, no licensing.
We need to roll back our regulatory environment until it is THAT easy for entrepreneur to start a new business.

Laid-off from his job as manager at McDonalds?

Something does not pass the smell test here. McDonalds has continued to grow despite the bad economy. You almost never see one close or go out of business. And they are always desperate for management help, since frankly it ain’t a prestige job. I have known desperate people down to their last who were still able to find a job as manager at a McDonalds. Often it proved to be their salvation.

If they let you go I’d have to say the odds are pretty strong you are either a) a total incompetent, or b) a thief (or, like the manager of one downtown Pittsburgh McDonalds, using your job as cover to run an over-the-counter drug market)

Who knows. There is a picture of the young mother (married) who burst into tears. She doesn’t fit the profile (yeah, I said PROFILE) of an Obama voter.

And regarding that McDonald’s manager who was laid off. Really? Even Micky D’s is laying off?

But the hard reality is what you said. Shame on Obama for destroying the Country they way he is.

AND Rahm Emmanuel ...

AND demeocrats forever ...

AND will fight you if you try to tell then they've been wrong, they are wrong, and it's their own damned fault.

No, they almost never close, but they do close. Especially if it is located in a poor area that got even poorer because of Obama. My wife went on a mission trip to WV and to her it seemed like everyone with any brains leaves as soon as they can.

Heh. I’m poor. Financially, probably worse off than the woman referenced. She’s got a live husband, too.
I don’t consider myself “trapped...amid America’s abundance.”
There are worse things. It bothers me some, because I can’t give my child the things I’d like to. But being below the poverty line doesn’t mean you’re in a trap.
It’s their attitude needs adjustment, not their benefits.

“O” is deliberately encouraging this entire train wreck.

Lots of this stuff is avoidable, and he is not going to put the breaks on.

Barack Obama wants social dependents who obey him. The more the better. Anyone else gets screwed.

Also even if he lost his job through his own fault, there still aren’t many jobs to be had out there.

“It bothers me some, because I can’t give my child the things I’d like to. “

God bless you for that attitude. I grew up in a family with 6 kids. We didn’t get many “things” but we did have parents who loved us, told us we could be anything we wanted to be and made sure we had a good education. Most of us made it through nursing school or college.

As long as your child has a roof over their head and food to eat, you have nothing to be ashamed of. Good luck out there.

Out of work for two years?

I may be wrong, but it sounds to me like someone's unemployment checks just ran out. . .so it's time to cry.

Call me a devil, but why did Ms. Farris - the first person quoted - and her husband procreate when neither of them had been employed for at least a year. She’s holding her four-month-old daughter in a photo, and the article explains that neither mom nor dad had worked for two years. Walgreen’s sells condoms, last time I checked. They’re a lot cheaper than new babies.

Thank you kindly. Being older helps. If I were 25 and broke, I’d probably go crazy worrying about it! As it is, I’m an older mom and have seen enough of life to know that money is not the make-or-break factor in anything vital. :)

I can think of only 2 in my area that have closed.

One was in a very poor location (on a divided highway and could only be easily reached from the outbound side. Hence no breakfast traffic.)

And one downtown which was, at one time, the highest grossing per square foot in the state (according to an acquaintance who worked for the franchisee). Closed due to too many druggies and homeless hanging around scaring away paying customers.
