Food Inflation Reaches "Quite Concerning" Levels In Houston

The rate of food inflation is "quite concerning," according to a Jefferies survey from Houston. This could lead to pressure on manufacturers and retailers:

Our pricing survey in Houston once again showed further price increases coming through to retail. Our average basket is now up over 9% in about a year and increased +1.5% since our last visit to the market in July. Clearly, we are now seeing very sizable price movements in our basket and, even in the robust economic climate in Houston, the size of the inflation being seen is quite concerning. With prices moving significantly higher, a stressed consumer is responding as can be seen with the volume declines and uptick in private label consumption (see our note Nielsen Nuggets, September 15, 2011). If there is a silver lining, the sequential price increases decelerated in the latest survey.

This is Obama's hidden tax on poor people.

Unprecedented U.S. money supply to create inflation - in time.

Everyone needs to grow SOMETHING, even if it’s a basil plant in your windowsill.

We’re soon going to be on our own for our food, because the “powers that be” want to control us through our food supply.

Interesting thought - the government that controls the food supply doesn’t need to control the guns of honest people.

This article is crap.

How is more food a bad thing? Why is food inflation a cause for concern?

Now if it were the PRICE of food that is inflating... then that’s a different story.

But the article doesn’t say that.

If they think food prices are high now, just wait till they see beef, pork, and chicken prices next year, from what I’ve heard and read.

Before Obama took office I could buy a pound of hamburger at my local Wal-mart for 99 cents.Today that same pound of hamburger just cost me 2.59,,,and this is Wal-mart,other stores in my area are closer to 3.00.Even Hamburger Helper cant help with those prices.

Reading, at the least the first sentence, helps one make pertinent, informed posts.

Many farmers and ranchers sold their herds due to the drought. The corn, milo and cotton crops were severely impacted as well. When the food for chickens, hogs and beef is less than 50% of normal, prices will skyrocket.

I haven't heard about peanut crops, but imagine that was affected too. Many local producers of fruit and vegetables were also affected. I'll bet the pecan crop will be less than 75% of normal.

Not only do they need to grow something, but they better start learning how to cook wild game.

I’ve got a feeling wild pig is going to end up in more and more peoples pots so they better learn how to cook it.

I heard peanut butter is due for a 30% increase in price by the end of October. If I recall the price increase is due to drought.

We have seen similar increases as well. Sadly, if Ned Schmidt is right on his prediction, we'll see prices 50-100% higher by next year. (For the record, I hope he's wrong, but his reasoning sounds very plausible.)

The food companies aren’t stupid. They also increase the volume of air in their packaging and sell slightly smaller packages.

No feral pigs around here. I guess I’ll have to raise the tame variety. Pigs are very good at turning scrap organic material into tasty protein.

I live in Dallas and have an apt. in Houston for business use. I have noticed a distinct difference in grocery prices between the two cities recently at Kroger stores.

Milk for example was $2.39 per gallon in Dallas and $3.49 per gallon at the Clear Lake store during the same week.

This is anectdotal, and may just be an anomaly in the Houston store which has a new manager, but $1.00 per gallon difference seems a little much.

I notices other items with different markups as well.
