NATO agreed on Wednesday to a three-month extension of its air-and-sea campaign in Libya as the country's new rulers try to dislodge well-armed Gaddafi loyalists holding out in several towns.
The agreement to extend the United Nations-mandated mission, which NATO took over on March 31, came at a meeting of ambassadors of the 28 NATO states in Brussels, a NATO diplomat said.
The current operations mandate was due to expire on Sept. 27, and it was the second 90-day extension to the mission to protect civilians that has involved a campaign of air strikes and a naval mission to enforce a U.N. arms embargo against ousted leader Muammar Gaddafi's government.
"We are all pretty clear we are in the final stages of the old regime's ability to threaten civilians," another NATO diplomat said.
"But for some time now everyone has been united behind the idea that we need to keep the mission going as long as civilians are under threat and we still see civilians are under threat from actions on the ground."
Eight of the 28 NATO nations have taken part in air strikes since the mission began and have flown 23,350 sorties, including 8,751 strike sorties against targets such as command centres, armoured vehicles and missile sites.
Fourteen ships under NATO command are patrolling the central Mediterranean Sea to enforce a U.N. arms embargo.
NATO has so far suffered no casualties in the mission.
NEW U.N. RESOLUTION
A revised U.N. Security Council resolution on Libya last week left the arms embargo in place, but allows Libya's interim government and the United Nations to import light weapons to maintain security.
It did not call for an end to the no-fly zone NATO has been enforcing, but diplomats say Libyan civil airliners will be allowed to fly provided they notify...

days, not weeks
Iran was not built in a day.
He, Obama, has to secure the treasure chest for the upcoming MB/Obama/AlQuaeda and Iran alliance.
3 months seems to be several weeks.
You mean we’re still in Libya?
Now, let’s see. What was the supposed reason for imposing a no-fly zone? Fewer casualties?
The war would have been over in another week or two, if Sarkozy, Obama, and pals had not decided to intervene.
Thousands have been killed, with the aim of installing a terrorist government. And it’s not over yet.
does Congress get a say in any of this...?
...or 91 days. See how it’s just perspective?
Days, as in 3,000 of them.
What was the death count before we decided to invade. What is the death count now.
“Days, not weeks” clock: 186 days.
Less than 500 before NATO assault on Libya. Mostly AQ goons. It is over 70,000 now. Mostly civilians.
British SAS, Qatari and AQ bashibozouk not included, several thousand so far.
NATO's action is holdup going wrong. Full scale ground invasion and extermination of 5m of Libyans is NATO's only option if they want to plunder Libya's wealth.
Why doesn’t NATO solve the problem of Rebels killing blacks, by bombing the blacks for them, or is that why they extended the time.
And as a matter of fact, there is no new regime. AQ goons are busy killing each other in Tripoli as of yesterday. "Old regime" is busy exterminating NATO's AQ proxy army ("civilians" in NATO lingo)-that's why NATO needs extension in Libyan quicksand.
Daffy is the only government recognized by Libyan tribes. They do not give camel's hoof for AQ goons being recognized outside of Libya.
The US is flying combat missions over Libya. Despite what “The Chosen One” says, US aircraft are bombing the country.
Sounds like another Muslim helping another.
Kadaffi is “surrounded” .Insurgents have 80,000 casualties.
