If there is a Klan in Jasper Co. it would be in the southern part of the co...near Vidor.

City of Jasper is in northern part of the county.

There was a family of Klan members here right after the Byrd trials but they moved on lng ago. They were not hidden...always seeking attention.

I hope he had repented of his sin

Evidently not. Saw him on the news today and he said he had no regrets.

A Sounder is a largeframed, bignosed dog( usually a Redbone or Catahoula) (not a Curdog), very common in E.Texas/Louisiana. Excellent for tracking when a human cannot.

Actually most of the so-called sundown towns were up in Yankeeland.

A lot of the "sundown towns" in Michigan were unofficial. Some were open like Dearborn. From what I've heard, a lot of the smaller towns would reportedly have a cop pull up and "suggest" that a black person who isn't one of the few who are part of the community go elsewhere. It wasn't limited to blacks, but since small towns around here are about 98% white, they stick out.

I'm fairly old (see my prior post about Baltimore) but I didn't move to Texas until years after the Greenville sign (on highway 67) was removed. An acquaintance of mine (around my age) who was from Hunt County explained that the sign was just a point of pride about the rich soil up there and had no intent to be racist in any way.

That said, I do remember "Colored" restrooms, water fountains and waiting rooms. And believe me, they certainly weren't only in the South. Having lived in both the Yankee region and here in the South, relations between the races are far better here and certainly less strained.

Thanks. Yes apparently may have been pre-50’s.

When running the roads toward Beaumont I luckily never had any need to head east until much later.

Google more or less says the same on Vidor and the “sign”. Plus lots in Yankeeland and Hawthorn Kalifornia. Greenville’s was rather tame.

This thing in Jasper gave a pretty nice part of Texas a bad and mostly undeserved reputation due to some whitetrash visitors.

What irritated me about this crime was the way the left tried to exploit it.

The man was convicted of murder under Gov Bush, but the family appeared in commercials condemning Bush for “murdering their father all over again” because he didn’t have the murderer tried also for race bias. The commercial left the impression that Bush let the guy get away with murder.

IMHO, that was just dirty race card politics.

SHORT HISTORY OF NASTY VIDOR
by Danny L. Yeager

Jasper, TX, is the East Texas city where James Byrd was killed as he was dragged behind the truck of local racists. Jasper lies in a county directly to the north of Orange County, home of Vidor, TX.

In The Touchstone’s summer issue last year, Lara Kasper-Buckareff wrote on the Ku Klux Klan rally that occurred in College Station [The Touchstone, Vol. VIII, No. 3, Summer 1998]. In that article Lara presented some background on the Knights of the White Kamellia Ku Klux Klan headquartered in Vidor. Since then The Touchstone has gotten some letters from people who were upset [The Touchstone, Vol. VIII, No. 5, Nov./Dec. 1998, The Touchstone, Vol. IX, No. 1, Feb./Mar. 1999, The Touchstone, Vol. IX, No. 2, April/May 1999].

One was from a Vidor resident whose father is a Mexican who had lived in Vidor for a number of years. He claimed that his father had never feared for his life, had never been the victim of a hate crime, and had never been threatened by the KKK.

That may well be true for some, perhaps even all, of the few Hispanic-Americans who live in Vidor. According to the 1990 census, Vidor, a town of about 11,000 had 252 people of Hispanic origin. There were zero blacks. In fact, for over seventy years Vidor had no blacks at all. In the 1920s the last blacks were driven out of town by a number of terrorist incidents lead by the numerous Klan members in the town. This was racism tied to economics — the blacks owned the land and the whites wanted it. The whites in and around Vidor succeeded in getting the land through intimidation and terror.

Vidor is located approximately 10 miles from Beaumont across the Neches river. The river and nearby swamps made the logging town of Vidor an isolated and unpleasant place to live for much of its history. The surrounding thick forests provided some cover for secret meetings of the Klan. With improved transportation and the draining of some of the swamps, Vidor became a haven for Beaumont racists in the 1960’s and 70’s who were fleeing that city because of the inchoate civil rights struggle there, school desegregation and the rising power of the black minority.

The unpleasant living conditions in and around Vidor insured that only people from the lower economic classes would make the move. Vidor was known for two prominent hand painted signs on the outskirts of town. One read, “Niggers read this and run. If you can’t read, run anyway.” and another that simply said “Nigger don’t let the sun set on you in Vidor.”

In 1993 on orders from the Federal judiciary, integration was attempted. Four black families or individuals were relocated into the previously all-white HUD housing complex in Vidor. Within months all four were driven out after enduring many racial taunts, snubs from local white-owned businesses , and death threats — including “security patrols” around the town by the Klan in a refurbished Texas Department of Corrections bus. Within months all four had left. The last black person to leave was Bill Simpson. Simpson was murdered on the streets of Beaumont in 1993 on the day he moved out of Vidor. Some have said that the murder was retaliation and was arranged through the drug connections of some Texas racists and black Beaumont street gangs.

Vidor was dubbed “Texas most hate-filled town” by the December 1993 Texas Monthly. This is a moniker it appears that the city of Vidor justly deserves.

___________________________________________________________

In more than one case in Texas the Census lists a hundred or 150 Blacks living in a town - they are all servants. I have been in more than one town where there simply was no Black population. You didn’t see any in the stores, businesses, driving around after work, hanging out on the corner. The townspeople made a decision that they didn’t want any and that’s how it was. Nobody ever spoke out loud or wrote a ruling. It was quietly determined by the city fathers and that’s how life was.

____________________________________________________________I didn’t write this list. I doubt if they are still all white today. No, that’s not the term because there was Mexicans in the towns I knew of.

Yes, King was gang raped in prison by blacks but...he wouldn't admit or talk about it.

U of T psychologists reported;y evaluated King in prison and he is very bright. He was adopted and loved his adopted mother. She died when he was about 16 and he more or less dropped out. Stopped going to school, started getting into trouble. Went to prison for stealing.

King's favorite columnist is Thomas Sowell.

The one put to death tonight was the ring leader...and denied it. He was bad news! He was the criminal mind in the trio.

Byrd had a record a mile long ...and all 4 were on parole.

if u think this sort of bs is fun just wait till u get a load of the new Straw Dogs just came out

from some Israeli American creep/punk who was kind enough to so far give us The Contender and The Plame Affair movie

I never saw any such signs in Mississippi 50 years ago either.

it’s bs..like Matt sez..where are the photos..genuine ones

but now...fast forward...where pray tell is now proven in epidemic proportion to be dangerous for whites to be at any time much less after dark?

anywhere blacks outnumber us...that is where

do we do that to them?

are u kidding...Holder would have his dreadlocked gestapo down here in hours

more race killings than all of Reconstruction through Jim Crow combined by a many factors going on now for 3-4 decades

and nary a peep..many here even afraid to say it

it’s dangerous being white...my ancestors knew the future and they feared it...with good reason apparently

race progress is mighty fun

Since we're discussing signs in this thread...

Years have passed since I last saw those billboards. But the legacy of the Warren court and its judicial activism is what we're living with today. If I could draw a dividing line in recent American history, it would be the ascent of Earl Warren to the Supreme Court. And that was, IMHO, the beginning of our descent as a nation.

And, sadly you're right wardaddy, even here on Free Republic, we have to tread very lightly on these volatile topics and watch our words. (See any of the MLK threads as a case in point).

you know...I think I remember those Impeach Warren signs..I had my dad’s Goldwater signs from 1964 until a few years ago

I will say one thing...on JFK..day of death

they dismissed school...2 hours early maybe...I was in Jackson MS at French Elementary...I noticed many kids...me in 2nd grade...were parroting that they knew their parents would not be very sad.

He was not loved in MS except by blacks and white libs.
