This was news in 1979.
Reagan had nearly toppled an incumbent President from his own party just 3 year earlier and was leading the GOP polls throughout '79. There was no reason to get in.
There's no one positioned that way today.
How's that for perspective?

My 12th anniversary round the corner.

Wow, he waited until the November before the election.
Do you think people were writing articles about how no one supported him because he waited to long, or that they were losing interest, or he didn’t give them his schedule?
He played the media and got in when it was the right time.

Not exactly, Reagan made it pretty clear long before that, that he was running. He had went out and gotten staff, built a solid grassroots organization (I would dare say, better then what the GOP would have after he was gone), had already hooked campaign donors, and was recruiting more, and had even started quietly getting other pols to give him his endorsement.
In other words, his declaration was a rubber stamp, but he milked it pretty good, but it was about as much a secret to the country as Jimmy Carters incompetence was.

Reagan loved the USA with all of his heart and soul. Reagan knew he was the President of all the people in the USA and that was so important to him. There was no regionalism in his mind. no red states or blue states. He wanted Americans to succeed reguardless of race, religion, sexual preference or whatever. He was everything the liberals dishonestly claim they want to be. Just like Sarah Palin is everything liberal women have said they wanted to be for years. its a fraud.
there will never be another Ronald Reagan
Compare his love for the country and its people to the way Obama and Co sees things. sad isnt.

So if she gets in next week, you’ll vote for Obama?

But if Sarah Palin announces she's a candidate, she'll be the next best thing since Reagan. After all, she's probably the most vetted politician we've seen in many years, and trying to attack her now would be a waste of time and make the Democrats look even more silly and ridiculous.

No, I’ll vote for the republican candidate as long as it isn’t Romney. I like Sarah, I’m just sick of the dithering.

I was 27 at the time . First time I ever voted was in 1980 . Even volunteered to work for the campaign via the Suffolk County ( NY ) Republican Committee . It was an honor to play a tiny role in the election of one of our greatest Presidents .

Well, wait. Check the date of Reagan’s announcement above. Has SHE been dithering or have others (media and electorate along with the candidates) been jumping the gun? I know first-hand the media wants everyone to announce ASAP because the sooner they do, the sooner the political ads start rolling in.
ALWAYS — especially with the media — follow the money!
