Study: Most new Texas jobs went to immigrants

ORLANDO --

With both jobs and immigration likely topics of sharp debate at tonight's Republican debate here in Florida, a new report suggests that newly-arrived immigrants have filled a majority of new jobs created in Texas, home to Republican frontrunner Gov. Rick Perry.

"Of jobs created in Texas since 2007, 81 percent were taken by newly arrived immigrant workers (legal and illegal)," says the report from the Center for Immigration Studies, a group that advocates reduced levels of both legal and illegal immigration. The report estimates that about 40 percent of the new jobs were taken by illegal immigrants, while 40 percent were taken by legal immigrants. The vast majority of both groups, legal and illegal, were not American citizens.

Native-born Americans filled just 20 percent of the new jobs in Texas, the report says, even though "the native born accounted for 69 percent of the growth in Texas' working-age population." "Thus, even though natives made up most of the growth in potential workers, most of the job growth went to immigrants," the report concludes.

The report is based on analysis of the Census Bureau's Current Population Survey.

The study notes that 56 percent of newly-arrived immigrants in Texas since 2007 have had a high-school degree or less. But it also notes that "More than one out three…of newly arrived immigrants who took a job had at least some college." It would be a mistake, the report concludes, "to assume that immigrants are only competing for jobs at the bottom end of the labor market."

Perry is worse than Bush when it comes to illegals.

So much for Perry’s “job creation.”

judging by their past proclamations, what is their level of reliability?? I am always suspicious of these types of organizations until I know something of their track record.

So 69% of the new arrivals to Texas were Americans yet none of them came for work? Was it for the extreme heat and little rain? Something is fishy.

Illegals and new immigrants can’t collect unemployment (though some probably manage to).

An accurate, unbiased characterization of their study is that unemployment insurance benefits natives much, much more than new immigrants.

What, you mean a report from a group with an axe to grind isn't going to be quite trustworthy? /s

From the article: the report from the Center for Immigration Studies, a group that advocates reduced levels of both legal and illegal immigration. Yeah, they're going to do whatever they can to pump up jobs claimed by immigrants.

Of course, if this is true, well - Texas created 40% of the new jobs, they say 80% of those jobs went to immigrants. Thus 32% of all immigrants to the US moved to Texas in the last 3 years. That seems high...

As I poke around at this site, I find that Texas has had an increase of ~1.3 million in foreign born, from 2000 to 2009. The US as a whole had an increase of ~7.4 million over that timeframe. Meaning that Texas was about 17.5% of the total immigration.

About half what the survey implies. Yeah, I'm with you - they're not very reliable when their own numbers don't jive with real-world statistics!

Here is the ACTUAL report. Not quite what York would like to spin. But I doubt the Perry haters will be able to figure out the data.

HUMMM, all those employers hiring all those illegals!!!!!!

If people would dig into the background of that group you would find it to have ulterior motives. Sometimes people need to take some time and do their research before buying the propaganda.

If this @#$% keeps up i am going to “Mexican” myself and start working off the books and tell the government where to go. I might drive to L.A. and buy myself a bunch of matricular ID cards and sponge off the government as well. I am tired of being treated like a cash cow by the leeches in government.

Do a background search on the founders of the Center for Immigration Studies. They are nothing but a bunch of white nationalists. So people need to take their propaganda with a grain of salt.

The study speaks for itself. The methods and data used are included for all to see. The study is accurate.

And the sorry truth is that most people with a high school degree have an 8th grade education.

Have them further speak only Spanish and you are talking a majority multigenerational underclass, to be supported by taxpayers as far as the budget can forecast.

I’m glad to see the “Texas miracle” get exposed early enough for us not to serve Perry up on a platter to Obama in the general election.

I live in Texas. My wife's company has been trying for over a month to hire a few contract inspectors (Degree not needed) to do work for a two month project. It pays $45 to$55/hour with a 12 hour day 7 days per week until completion. Several people have turned it down and stated that "Now that they were able to collect unemployment for 2 to 3 years they didn't need to work and would rather spend their time fishing."

A lot of the business owners in a professional group that I belong to have the same problem hiring in the $75k to $125k range. There are a lot of signs posted for lessor paying jobs. I don't understand what this means, I am just stating the facts.

No kiddding!

It’s disturbing that the Perrybots here on FR, unable to argue against the facts of the study, have resorted to repeating lies from the despicable “Southern Poverty Law Center” to try and discredit the CIS.

Pathetic really.

For those who want further info on CIS:

Who We Are

The Center for Immigration Studies is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit, research organization. Since our founding in 1985, we have pursued a single mission – providing immigration policymakers, the academic community, news media, and concerned citizens with reliable information about the social, economic, environmental, security, and fiscal consequences of legal and illegal immigration into the United States.

The Center is governed by a diverse board of directors that has included active and retired university professors, civil rights leaders, and former government officials. Our research and analysis has been funded by contributions and grants from dozens of private foundations, from the U.S. Census Bureau and Justice Department, and from hundreds of generous individual donors.

Our board, our staff, our researchers, and our contributor base are not predominantly “liberal” or predominantly “conservative.” Instead, we believe in common that debates about immigration policy that are well-informed and grounded in objective data will lead to better immigration policies.

The data collected by the Center during the past quarter-century has led many of our researchers to conclude that current, high levels of immigration are making it harder to achieve such important national objectives as better public schools, a cleaner environment, homeland security, and a living wage for every native-born and immigrant worker. These data may support criticism of US immigration policies, but they do not justify ill feelings toward our immigrant community. In fact, many of us at the Center are animated by a “low-immigration, pro-immigrant” vision of an America that admits fewer immigrants but affords a warmer welcome for those who are admitted.

The study speaks for itself. The methods and data used are included for all to see. The study is accurate.

You do know that data can be manipulated right? The group has an ulterior motive. On the other thread last night it was pointed out that they didn't separate legal immigrants from illegal immigrants which skewed the results to favor their point of view.

That used to be called propaganda.

Propaganda is a specific type of message presentation, aimed at serving an agenda. Even if the message conveys true information, it may be partisan and fail to paint a complete picture.

The book Propaganda And Persuasion defines propaganda as "the deliberate, systematic attempt to shape perceptions, manipulate cognitions, and direct behavior to achieve a response that furthers the desired intent of the propagandist."

Did anyone hear the airhead statement Andrea Tantaros made on the Bob Beckel Show (nominally called "The Five") the other day?

Supposedly a reliable Republican conservative, she stated that Mexican illegal and legal immigrants were "doing the jobs that Americans won't do".

I put her tired old myth in quotes to call attention to her spouting such trite, false shibboleths as this one....and I hope she reads this and crawls in a hole someplace.

Between her and that O'Reilly-moral-equivalency-mushy middle-grating-on-the-nerves-RINO-dumkopf Dana Perino and the absence of any firm, knowledgeable conservatives on the panel (likeable as they may be), I want to throw something at the screen every day.

The show is one big joke. Beckel spews lies and throws out tons of fake figures....and there's no one to effectively refute him or knock him right out of the box..... only tut-tuts, laughs and giggles all around at his unadulterated robotic marxist party-line propaganda and his low-class humor.

Disgusting, cacaphonic show.

Throw an illegal immigrant in Beckel's seat....he pretends he's dozing from boredom all the time during the show so evidently he has a job he doesn't want to do as an American, also.

Thanks. Their basic lack of mathematical consistency was enough to show they were wrong, now I know it was by design - not just simply ignorance - that they reached their conclusions.

See my post 9 above. Their numbers are way out of line with actual immigration trends in the US. If this CIS report is correct, then 32% of all immigrants went to Texas - which isn't true.

Basic math consistency check - the CIS failed.
