Perry: "I Don't Think You Have a Heart" If You Oppose In-State Tuition for Children of Illegal

Full title: Perry: "I Don't Think You Have a Heart" If You Oppose In-State Tuition for Children of Illegal Immigrants

Perry's response was forceful and personal. "I don't think you have a heart," Perry told his critics.

"If you say that we should not educate children who come into our state for no other reason than that they've been brought their through no fault of their own, I don't think you have a heart," Perry said. "We need to be educating these children because they will become a drag on our society. I think that's what Texans wanted to do. Out of 181 members of the Texas legislature when this issue came up [there were] only four dissenting votes. This was a state issue. Texas voted on it. And I still support it today."

I read it twice. Slowly. What exactly did she say?

She’s proud of Jan Brewer for standing up for the constituents of her state? Well Perry did too.

When you have a near unanimous vote for the Texas Dream Act, signing it is just standing up for the constituents of the State of Texas.

Does Sarah Palin think the Texas Dream act should have been vetoed? I frankly can’t figure out what her position on illegal immigration is or how it differs from Perry.

The Republican base is an embarrassment to Romney too, how can one vote for a man who has no respect for me?

Perry saying we have no heart...breaks my heart.

The GOP is dead, they just don't know it yet.

Perry DOES have good points. But Illegal immigration, once dealt with, would have a cascade effect on many other economic and sociopolitical issues we have. RP just is a part of that problem. His own words/policies make it clear he will not be the man to lead us out of the desert.

There are better choices. Cain..Palin...even Newt for all his considerable baggage (and I’m stretching on that one) but it is what it it. Perry is in bed with the LaRaza and other race groups when it comes to illegals in America. He can’t duck it. He and his supporters can try but the Gen Pub ain’t likely to go along with it.

I have a heart for law abiding American citizens who have to live under politicians who won’t enforce our border security laws. Who try to guilt us for wanting a country NOT full of illegal aliens. That’s just a liberal tactic right there.

NO offense but he’s just digging a bigger hole.

This is the part of the debate where Perry lost my vote. I had been leaning Perry. A friend at work had already made up his mind and was all in for Perry. He just sent me an email after the debate. Perry lost him too. These damn politicians need to start taking illegal immigration seriously.

Governor of a border state filled with illegals and President of the USA are two very different things.

Other than that, Dunno, I am a Zonie, not a Texan. You want illegals here? Do you? Yes/No?

Simple. Vote Perry, get more.

I'm with Perry on this, and I'm a native Texan.

Those people live here. We didn't invite them or bring them in. Neither did Perry. Neither did Bush or Anne Richards. They came on their own, over decades of time.

Their kids grew up here. They played sports with our kids. They attended the same schools. We didn't invite them or encourage them to come here. I'm a parent and my kids attend school with them.

So they reach high school age and want to attend college and better their lives. They're essentially Americans, this is the only place they know. You let them pay tuition just like any other resident of the state. Not out of state tuition. Because they live here and their parents pay state and local taxes, and property taxes. Why make them pay out of state tuition when they've been residents for 4-6-11 years? Why tell them they CAN'T attend college?

They comprise only 1% of college freshmen in Texas. The whole matter is overblown. Hardly any of them ever apply for college. The ones that can earn the grades, I say let them have a shot just like any other person who's grown up here.

I know I'll get blasted and insulted for this position. I still believe in it. Perry may go down in flames but I think he is right. He signed a bill with only 4 dissenting votes. So I'm not the only one who shares the position.

“If Perry is such a louse, why was he elected Governor of Texas?”

Probably for the same reasons Arnold was elected Governor of California.

That entire group, on stage, is a complete EMBARRASSMENT !

And for those who think otherwise, they are in great need of an education; not to mention ice water thrown over their collective heads.

A shovel ready job opening? Grave diggers for the GOP;sadly.

He knew he needed the Hispanic vote for election so he was never going to veto this with the overwhelming vote of the legislature. He’s boxed in a corner on this issue.

It's going to be interesting to listen how old Rushbo is going to try and spin this foot-n-mouth disease remark by Perry on Fridays broadcast. Rush is great at spin control but he will have to do double time duty to spin it this time. Sorry Rush, looks like you hitched your horse to a loser this time around.

I thought that maybe you learned your lesson after helping Jorge Bush get re-elected to his second term. You sounded like you learned but now I'm not so sure. You fell for the 'Anybody But Obama' syndrome and look what has happened to you now. Perry shot himself in both feet and now doesn't have a leg to stand on. Kind of embarrassing isn't it!? Maybe you'll start beating the bushes for Sarah now.

Perry saying we have no heart...breaks my heart.

Lets say you were dragged here by your parents when you were 5 and you grew up in Texas and believed you were a Texan and you worked hard and graduated from Texas high school and got good enough grades to get into a Texas State University, what should Texas do to you? Send you back to Mexico, a country you've never been to? Deport you? (BTW only the Federal Government can deport you)?

What should Texas do to you?

If you think we should treat these children like the criminals they aren't, then I'd have to say yes you do not have a heart.

Perry still has me. He said nothing different tonight then he’s been saying. It was voted on at the state level, it passed.

I am having a really hard time getting past this. I like a lot of what Perry says but he is wrong about a fence. We can certainly build a fence. We put men on the Moon for crikes sakes. This instate tuition for illegals is just not resonating. I do not want to fight that amnesty fight again. I think this issue is really hurting Perry. Mitt looked good tonight and I swore in 2008 I would never vote for Mitt. Newt and Herman were not too shabby either.

Ditto. Where are the Perry supporters? I’ve been perusing these threads waiting for them to come to his defense. They are mia so far. Perhaps they are in a meeting trying to come up with something, anything, to spin his failure. Or maybe they’re busy picking the rose-colored glass slivers out of their eyes.
