Texas Gov. Rick Perry declared in the Republican presidential debate Thursday night that he had never advocated turning Social Security over to the states. His denial was hard to fathom given his past rhetoric about the program.

"Let the states do it," he said last year, for example.

He had already answered that in the last debate, when he said that no one was was advocating over turning seventy years of practice, or touching the pensions of present recipients. What he did not say and what he might have implied was that the states were competent to establish similar programs, that the constitutional basis of SS is dubious, and its method of funding more so.

Perry was disappointing. He seemed unprepared. His answer on the Pakistan question was weak. When he was asked about his relationship with W, he should have challenged the question, which was ridiculous.

Romney was very well prepared and slick as a Willy.

I’m starting to get a deja vu, as in “We are so screwed.”

He is underprepared.

The Pakistan answer told us he wants stronger ties to regional allies so we're not putting out necks out for every little crisis. We'd absolutely need help if, as the question suggested, Pakistani nukes fell into the wrong hands. The premise of the question was whether we'd go-it-alone without a plan. It was a trap to see if Perry would be more Bush-than-Bush. He didn't bite.

The W question was ridiculous but it's something on a lot of minds. One of the Fox idiots said Perry should've said how he differed with Bush on policy instead of talking about "No Child Left Behind." See? Idiot. "No Child Left Behind" *was* Bush policy and Perry opposed it.

Romney was very well prepared and slick as a Willy. / I’m starting to get a deja vu, as in “We are so screwed.”

I'm getting that feeling too.

I admit slightly hoping someone else might come in who isn't going to pressure Romney.

Oops! An unfinished edit flipped the meaning.

"I admit slightly hoping someone else might come in who isn't going to protect Romney."

Did anyone notice that Romney NEVER gave a point-blank answer to any question he was asked.

He’s slick, oily, and deceptive. It is totally impossible for him to give a simple yes or no answer to any question. In many cases he simply answered the questions by going off on some other direction to simply walk away from answering the question.

He reminds me of the Texas governor in the movie “The best little whorehouse in Texas.” You remember, the little fat governor doing the two-step around the capital when he was asked a question.

I don’t trust anyone who can’t give a factual, straight forward, yes or no answer to a question.

I heard one commentator earlier this morning say that Romney managed to praise Obama and praise Obama’s education secretary all without sounding like a flip-flopper.

I heard Perry was rough in this one,.

Perry got hammered on Social Security. He should have a canned response to the challenges (which have been repeated over and over.)

But, last night he struggled to frame his position.

Just a few well composed sentences could point out that SS WAS challenged on Constitutional grounds right after passage. It was upheld by that SCOTUS. So what? They got it wrong; or got it right, if the vision is for the central government to assume more power that the document grants it.

Give the sheeple a quick course in recent American history. SS was the camel’s nose in the tent.

There’s still time for Perry to get his act together. Hope he has the right team assembled. I wonder what Dick Cheney is doing these days?

I heard one commentator earlier this morning say that Romney managed to praise Obama and praise Obama’s education secretary all without sounding like a flip-flopper.

That was in response to Perry's claim that Romney was a big supporter of Obama's "Race to the Top" which is yet another hare-brained scheme to "fix" education.

And, yes. Romney deflected by blathering about how great the EdSec was for saying bad teachers should not be retained. Duh!

Neither the mods nor Perry challenged the deflection. Again, Perry seemed half prepared with this charge.

Did Perry make this statement: "people who don't support education benefits for the children of illegal immigrants are heartless"?

"I’m starting to get a deja vu, as in 'We are so screwed.'”

I am too. The more I see of Perry and Romney, the better Herman Cain looks.

Every time Perry opens his mouth I get the willies (pun intended), or I get bushed (pun intended again).

Every time Cain opens his mouth it gives me yet another reason to vote for him.

The problem with Cain is that like Steve Forbes,by the time I get to vote for him in the Tennessee primary, it will be too late

If present trends continue, Perry's campaign and possibly Romney's also will self-destruct, and who will be left?

So far, I haven't found anything about Cain that I don't like.

It appears to me that Perry's not ready for prime time--and never will be.
