Henry Luce said, "By any Marxian pattern of how classes behave, the upper class should be for you and the lower classes should be against you. How do you explain that?" In answering Luce's question, a European guest at the meeting who Chambers calls Smetana said to Luce: "You dont understand the class structure of American society or you would not ask such a question. In the United States, the working class are Democrats, the middle class are Republicans and the upper class are Communists." This very revealing answer to Luce many years ago explains why so many wealthy and successful people in our business, entertainment industry and government are liberal leftist (communists?).
A planned economy is very attractive to somebody with the arrogance to think that he would be a member of the planning class.
The "old money" rich do not necessarily have the IQ, energy, and drive that allowed their ancestors to accumulate the money they now live on. What they DO have are connections -- they and their lawyers know people in government and in the bureaucracies. The bigger government gets, the more valuable those connections become as far as getting waivers for themselves, and handicapping their competitors.
It doesn't do a thing to explain it, but I can. Communism buys security for the rich at the expense of the middle class. The rich have tax-exempt foundations in which to hide most of their personal spending money. Said foundations are also conduits for "investments" in "charities" that manipulate the resources and markets in which they are invested. Hence, the more power government has to influence said markets the more secure are the rich... only so long as the middle class survives to provide the government operating cash flow.
