Petition to legalize pot is first to hit White House threshold; ET proposal close
By Brendan Sasso - 09/22/11 06:33 PM ET
A proposal to legalize marijuana is the first idea on the White House's online petition site to gather enough signatures to break the threshold required to receive an official response.
The White House has promised to evaluate and issue a formal response to any idea that receives more than 5,000 signatures within 30 days. Visitors are free to offer their own proposals.
The first proposal to reach that limit asks, "Isn't it time to legalize and regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol? If not, please explain why you feel that the continued criminalization of cannabis will achieve the results in the future that it has never achieved in the past?"
Currently, the fourth and sixth most popular petitions on the site also advocate legalizing marijuana.
The seventh most popular petition, with 390 signatures, urges the president "to formally acknowledge an extraterrestrial presence engaging the human race." The petition claims hundreds of witnesses have testified to the existence of aliens visiting Earth.
The White House has not yet issued a formal response to the marijuana legalization petition.
Drug legalization questions have also dominated Obama's YouTube question-and-answer sessions.
It’s good that people have these important issues to keep them occupied while waiting for the total economic collapse. Do they imagine that, when there are no other non-government jobs, they will all support themselves by selling marijuana to government employees?
That might not be a totally crazy plan, actually ... but maybe it would be better if marijuana remained illegal, because they’ll need the concealment skills when Zero makes it illegal to grow your own food.

So THAT’S why we can’t get a birth certificate for Zero.
That is a BS thing for Barry to do but I'll bet he chickens out on giving this one an answer. Personally I think cannabis should be regulated the same as alcohol (actually it should be treated like the weed that it is, a non-entity legally) but Zer0 doesn't have the courage to address this now that he's in full campaign mode again.
Is pot planned as his ace in the hole? We’ll know soon I guess.
I signed the one to legalize growing industrial hemp.
This certainly isn’t the kind of thing people can be trusted to decide for themselves.
Well, heck. I think we need to start petition after petition for the pos poser to step down from office since the white hut will be evaluating and issuing stements on every 5,000 petition submitted.
So THATS why we cant get a birth certificate for Zero.
I do belive you are on to something....
You beat me to it. A petition to resign ought to get 5k signatures in an hour easily.
“Green Jobs”
Just legalize it and stop the salem witch hunt on a good part of society..nothing Christian about locking people up for weed and taking their homes...
If conservatism is about liberty and personal responsibility there is nothing conservative about it either.
Agreed.
Substance use is a lightning rod issue as it presents a contradiction for those rascally totalitarian concervatives who feel goervment control of Naughty Vegetable use is OK.
I am for this
I know a ton of people who smoke and I did smoke it in the past (20 years ago)
It is far less harmful than alcohol, and the criminal costs are worse than the ‘problem’
LOL!
I don't think the Founding Fathers thought anything like that. I'm pretty sure they did everything they could to diametrically oppose such thinking. I don't want anyone, from any spectrum of political ideology, who thinks they can and should make decisions for me making decisions for me. Not even with the best intentions.
It may be a common tendency for people to think they can do a better job of running other people's lives but it's a tendency that should be roundly rejected. People never learn much about making decisions if others do it for them. At best you get an intellectual understanding of what it is to fall down and pick yourself up not the direct understanding of having "been there, done that."
