Slippery slope for ‘slick’ Rick
Boston Herald ^ | 9/25/11 | Howie Carr

Posted on 09/24/2011 9:51:38 PM PDT by raccoonradio

I never thought Rick Perry was going to be the next Ronald Reagan. But who knew he’d turn out to be the next Mumbles Menino?

At least the governor of Texas picked the right place to turn into a pumpkin — Orlando, home of Disney World.

That GOP debate Thursday night was a political NASCAR race. All the fans got what they came for — a massive crack-up on the far turn. Remember two weeks ago when everyone said Rick Perry was ready for prime time. It turned out to be a “monstrous lie,” to coin a phrase.

Here is Gov. Perry, unleashing his roundhouse on Mitt Romney: “I think Americans just don’t know sometimes which Mitt Romney they’re dealing with. Is it the Mitt Romney that was on the side of against the Second Amendment before he was for the Second Amendment?”

Did I say Mumbles Menino? This is sounding like Ted Kennedy after a long car ride.

“Was was it before he was before the social programs, um, from the standpoint of he was for, uh, standing for Roe versus Wade before he was against vers — Roe versus Wade?”

Perry went to Texas A&M. Fill in your own Aggie joke here.

“Uh, who, uh, he was for Race to the Top, uh, he’s for Obamacare and now he’s against it.”

The next morning Perry was reduced to telling an audience, “It’s not who’s the slickest candidate or the smoothest debater.” Or, as Mumbles puts it, “I’m not a fancy talker.”

Perry has a glass jaw. How about when Rick Santorum was hectoring him about whether Texas was succeeding in keeping illegal aliens out? Perry stumbled, swallowed, and finally said the Lone Star State was “putting the aviation assets on the ground.”

That does a lot of good, I’m sure.

Who would have thought that Gov. Aggie would have more problems with immigration that Mitt is having with Romneycare? The difference is, Obomneycare, as Tim Pawlenty used to call it, doesn’t really start destroying health care until 2013. An illegal alien could kill you today — a clear and present danger.

So when Perry haughtily said that anyone who opposes granting in-state (read: free) tuition to illegal aliens “doesn’t have a heart” — well, I think we have a problem, Houston.

What is it with these Democrats-turned-Republicans from Texas? They all seem to have such fine pedigrees. John Connolly in 1980, spending $13 million to win one delegate. Phil Gramm, another total washout, in 1996. And now Perry, the governor with a heart — for illegal aliens.

Too bad for us here at the Herald? How many front pages and exclusives did we waste on this guy? “Deep in the Heart of Taxes” — that was a great headline. And now it’s all for naught.

I live 15 miles from Rick’s parents and know both of them.

For all his failings he is a Texan and carries the imprint.

I probably know more about his failings than most of FR, but have never met Rick in person. He is a few years younger than I am, and I lived away from this county for 25 years.

Don’t believe everything about him presented in the MSM. Remember what they did to Sarah Palin.

The MSM is just a pack of running dogs, facing extinction.

Thanks for the insight into Perry's personal life but it has no bearing on my opinion of him nor does what the MSM says. I have read many things about Perry and have researched and confirmed them through Texas government websites and other sources.

One of my biggest critiques of Perry is due to his liberal policies regarding ILLEGAL immigration. One need not listen to the MSM to know what I've heard is truth as he confirmed it himself during the debates.

I am a conservative. Perry is not.

Thanks again.

It actually isn’t the smoothest debater.

It actually isn’t who wins the FL straw poll.

Who do you think will win the Iowa Caucus? It won’t be Michele Bachmann, who won the Iowa Straw Poll but has destroyed her credibility by going over the cliff in her anti Perry zeal. I don’t know who it will be, but if Perry’s still in the race, whether he wins it or not I won’t be unhappy, as long as it is either Perry, Herman Cain or Sarah Palin - if she runs, of course.

Or, if someone wins I can’t support, that the Iowa Caucus turns out not to be determinative of who wins the nomination.

Most of the time, it has not been determinative.

Again, I understand your skepticism. But it is TIME to DownSize DC! We need a President who “will” pull that trigger. Rick did for the state of Texas. Would he do it in DC? I am not sure.

In my opinion, there is no other solution to our mess than to gut and field dress the Washington bureaucracy.

I appreciate and respect your opinion but I have to disagree. Given his record of pandering to ILLEGAL aliens I believe Perry would be a terrible president.

If amnesty is given to the hordes of ILLEGALS in America they will become voters. And if they become voters they will likely vote democrat. And if they vote democrat the Republicans will likely never again win a national election.

A president Rick Perry would not be good for America.

Did a quick search and found that...is this true, honestly and no dumb dumb spin, please...did he accuse Deval Patrick of giving illegal aliens free tuition?

Howie on illegals receiving in-state tuition:

http://audio.wrko.com/a/42999711/should-illegal-aliens-receive-in-state-tuition.htm

Basically, he argues in-state tuition for illegals adds up to free tuition, since illegals qualify for full scholarships, having no income (as far as the state knows).

Governor Coupe Deval, David Axelrod's other client (Together we can!), favors offering illegals in-state tuition.

During the fall semester, 12,138 students - about 1 percent of all Texas college students - benefited from the state law granting in-state tuition, according to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Most of the immigrants among those students are illegal, and some others are not legal permanent residents or U.S. citizens.

Texas awarded about $33.6 million in state and institutional financial aid to those students between fall 2004 and summer 2008.

Mark Levin, on his show 9/23/11, regarding Rick Perry and in-state tuition for the children of illegals:

"They [the children of illegals] are being educated, right up to and through high school.

Where did it come to pass that if you're here illegally, you have a right to a college education, let alone the right to have it subsidized, when all Americans do NOT have their college educations subsidized?

I mean, this is perverse, to be honest with you.

And it is also the position of the Bush family. And I think…if I'm wrong, I stand corrected…it's the position of some of our "inside-the-beltway" publications.

But it is not the position of the American people, who have to pay this bill, endlessly."

[He has taken some real bone headed positions before, but he has a lot of things right.]

I don’t know if the question is whether Perry is a horrible conservative as much as whether he can repreent us at the presidential level.
