Navarrette: Harsh immigration rhetoric not helpful to GOP hopefuls

The Republican Party has dug itself an awfully deep hole with Latino voters. And every time a Republican talks about immigration, the hole gets a little deeper.

That includes nearly all the 2012 Republican presidential candidates. They can't avoid talking about the subject because it keeps coming up in the debates. There are three reasons for this: Many Republican voters care about the issue; Gov. Rick Perry's opponents see it as a weakness for a front-runner they would like to portray as soft on illegal immigration; and the media enjoy the sight of Republicans clawing at one another, especially over an issue that makes most of them look dishonest, extreme and out of touch.

At one time, I would of thought this was OBL rhetoric.

Now, I see my folly.

Good Ol' Ruben - playing the "divide by race" card.

Since when did hispanics become more important than Americans?

The only people such talk is offending, Ruben, are illegals and their supporters, none of whom vote republican.

And as we know Ruben Naverette speaks for all or most latinos.

Thats what all the spokemen for the Democrat plantation would have us believe.

Blacks aren’t the only people stuck on the Democrat Plantation.

The people of this country are ready to talk seriously about illegal immigration and do something as well . The intimidating scare tactics by the MSM over our govt. officials and population is a ruse . Now let’s deal with the problem for real right now ,,, it’s not a taboo issue anymore .

People willing to cave on illegal immigration may as well be true to themselves and vote democrat right now because illegal immigrants are a sure fire path to permanent democrat majority.

If there are 30 million illegals in America, that’s enough to populate some 50 congressional districts. They don’t even need to vote to create those house seats, they only need to be counted.

Think about that, that’s a potential 50 likely democrat seats that shouldn’t even exist but we are forced to constantly fight against them in DC.

If the illegals start voting, we may as well just give up now.

I want to help. No, really. I want more Latinos to become comfortable with the idea of voting for a Republican — as long as it's the right kind of Republican.

Latinos are the new blacks. They belong to the democrats. The republicans are the opposition party. If the Pubs and the Tea Party can't patch together a coalition that will win the WH and and retain some control of Congress on their terms then the US as we know it will be remade in the image and likeness of a banana republic.

Wait until they hear Marco Rubio.

I am damn sick of seeing these know-nothing jerkoff media/pundit types telling us we are racist.

Pretend journalists keep saying they LISTEN and report. Not one single Republican candidate has said “keep those Latinos out.”. Not one. ALL of them have said, “Let’s have legal immigration.”.

MOST of them have been, at least via lip service, against ILLEGAL immigration. This is the new picture of hate—to oppose CRIME?

I SUGGEST we steal some laptops from these journalists, and then give them to children. When the journalists protest, we accuse them of being against better technology for kid’s education.

“Since when did Hispanics become more important than Americans?”

Perfect example.

You failed to differentiate between actual citizens and illegals.

He’s right. Let’s discuss the issue of immigration in all its aspects - controlling illegal immigration and also controlling legal immigration. No more “political refugee” Muslims (most of whom are unwelcome in their home countries because they were involved with militant Islamic groups or movements), for example, who come here and go directly on state aid and no more “family reunification” that enables these same people to bring family members here and, again, put them right on welfare or even SSI.

Let’s work out a short-term visa program for people from neighboring countries (who share much of our history and our values) to come here and work at jobs that our aging population can no longer fill. Let’s figure out how to sort out the huge accumulation of illegal immigrants (illegal simply because there wasn’t any provision for them to come here legally and then return home) without destroying the economies of places in which they are concentrated, and also without losing their skills and capacities.

Let’s discuss the way Obama has simply issued executive orders to readjust the legal immigrant mix so that we get more people from “traditionally Muslim countries,” to the detriment of people from places like Canada and South America, who just want to come here to work, not to impose Islamic law on us.

But instead, discussions of immigration have turned into nothing but anti-Hispanic hate fests that would make the Know Nothings blush. Nobody really wants to discuss immigration with a view to making any changes in it, but instead to spew invective. And this is what the Dems are taking advantage of, not only to make the GOP look bad with a large potential voting block, but to destroy GOP candidates who actually want to work on the issue.

I got sick of people here referring to “Jorge” Bush, ironically just because he actually had enough courage to make suggestions about dealing with immigration, and now I have seen them referring to “Ricardo” Perry. But of course, none of these same critics have any realistic or positive solutions of their own, which is one of the reasons I have thought several of them (the more toxic, hate-filled ones) are probably secret Dem operatives.

And if the employers of ‘illegals’ think they are saving a dime, the Labor Department is waiting for someone to provided them with leads to come calling on businesses... well that is ‘some’ businesses.. I am NOT hearing one word of ‘warning’ by these candidates that IF you hire illegals the ‘government’ is going to come calling for their share of the profits.

They know we are winning. The last 6 months the liberals columnists, bloggers, pundits and talking heads have gone from smug braggadocio and “We won deal with it” cockiness back to sniveling whining and lecture mode once again. I say...”ehhh shut up we tried it your way dummy, you were wrong now go away..”. When we engage in debates with idiots we give their arguments weight. We need to stomp them out of existence, discredit and defund their ideology and do everything we can to neuter them.

The reasonable approach to illegal immigration was taken in 1986 with Simpson-Mazzoli, which provided amnesty for illegals meeting certain requirements, and also for strict enforcement to prevent a recurrence of the problem.

They expected 1.5 million to apply for amnesty and got more than 3 million. That one-time amnesty was to clear up the problem once and for all.

How did the reasonable approach work out?

Nothing will solve this problem but an end to amnesties and strict enforcement of the border, strict enforcement of visa programs, and strict enforcement internally, particularly at the employer level.

Presidents like both of the Jorge Bushes, and Slick Willie Clinton, and Zero are the reason the reasonable approach tried in 1986 failed totally and gave us an even bigger problem. And now another border state politician, Ricardo Perry, promises more of the same whether he’s honest enough to admit it or not.

They all earned those nicknames many times over.

Just about all the demagoguery these days comes from the apologists and advocates for even more amnesty and more illegal immigration.
