In the straw poll, Romney won 50.1 percent of the 681 votes cast compared to 16.8 percent for Perry. Both men gave separate speeches Saturday to the activists gathered for their biennial conference, with Perry winning some supporters but Romney clearly the overwhelming favorite. Michigan gave Romney his only primary win in the 2008 presidential contest before he pulled out of the race once it became clear Arizona Sen. John McCain would win the nomination.
Cain got 8.5 percent, while Texas Rep. Ron Paul got 7.7 percent. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann received 4 percent, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich won 3.5 percent and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum got 3.4 percent. Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman got 2 percent, while Michigan Rep. Thad McCotter, who dropped out of the race Thursday, came in at under 1 percent with just five votes.
Straw poll voters also chose Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as their favorite to be the party's vice presidential nominee. He got 23 percent of the 481 votes cast, while Cain received 14 percent, Gingrich got 13 percent and Bachmann received 12 percent.

Don’t give us Romney, GOP!
There was a straw poll held today? Must have been a secret. Even the Paulbots wern’t there in force.
It was a buy in (candidate bought tix for their supporters) poll in Mackinac (sp?) I think. Mitt’s dad was gov there and Mitt has deep pockets so it really isn’t much of a surprise.
The state he grew up in and in which his daddy was a Senator and failed presidential candidate and auto CEO. Big deal.
He can win Massachusetts and New Hampshire as his home turf, too. And should do well in Utah, Idaho and Nevada due to identity politics.
That ain’t enough to win the nomination.
Romney better win in Michigan, considering his dad was once governor.
I meant Governor of Michigan. oops.
How many home states does Romney have?
- - —
Well, there is Mass and Michigan, and I heard he was buying/building a house in California.
And, he will win Utah hands down, because it is in a way a ‘home state’.
Actually, I am surprised. As McCotter pointed out, Michiganders are pretty peeved at Romney for opposing the auto bailouts. But then, this is the GOP, not the average voter.
Way too expensive.
The ticket itself was over $100, and the transportation costs were extremely high. People estimated it was a $400 weekend.
Palin is not likely to enter, because it is unlikely she would be elected. Ryan is not running, Christie is a liberal and the conservatives in the party would not vote for him. I wouldn’t. Jindal is not a natural born citizen so he could not run. The Michigan straw Poll doesn’t mean much. Perry still came in ahead of the rest of them. Since this is Romney’s home state, I would be surprised if he didn’t take the lions share.
So, so far there isn’t state where the straw poll winner also won another state? When will Utah hold theirs? It’s time for Huntsman to win, it seems. How about PA? Santorum also needs his turn.
BS!
Possibly among Dems.
Do you know where willard lives???? Well of course you do not, but a little hint, it is not Michigan.
“How many home states does Romney have? “
It’s more than just states.... he’s got planets too.
He owns a ranch in Montana with his sons, I think, and a home in Massachusetts and a home in New Hampshire , had not heard of one in California, but he has several adult kids.
How old would those people be that voted for his father.
