Iran just months from N-bomb
The Australian ^ | Sept. 26, 2011

IRAN may be just six months away from developing a nuclear bomb, despite international attempts to thwart the program through sanctions and cyber attacks. Two years after an underground installation in the city of Qmo was revealed in a joint press conference by US President Barack Obama, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and former British prime minister Gordon Brown, Iran has significantly advanced its uranium enrichment program at the site.

The latest report from the International Atomic Energy Agency concludes that Iran has not only boosted production but upgraded the level of enrichment from 3.5 per cent to almost 20 per cent and has installed more sophisticated centrifuges, which it is moving to the bunker in Qom, apparently to protect them from airstrikes.

Low-enriched uranium is used for nuclear power, which Iran insists is the purpose of its program.Weapons-grade uranium is about 90 per cent enriched.

"We believe if Iran broke out now they could have a bomb in six months," said David Albright, a former weapons inspector who runs the Institute for Science and International Security in Washington. "They've done this right in front of our faces."

A letter to the UN demanding they tell Iran "You'd better not do that" is an international attempt to thwart?

If you're talking a gunbarrel-style uranium-235 bomb like what was dropped on Hiroshima, I think Iran could actually build one now. But it would not be a light device--you're talking a device weighing around 3,000 pounds, which could limit it to the Su-24 ground attack plane as the primary delivery means.

We’ve been hearing this same broken record for years that they are months away from developing a functional weapon...

Its almost like the sky is falling...

But in reality it really is...If they get one, I am not concerned with the man or country that has hundreds or thousands of functional warheads (devices)...

I am extremely fearful, of the same, only wanting one...

Not with 20% uranium. They’d need at least 80% for that.

If I were a bad guy, and I am not really...

I would take a 3K pound device, put it on a truck, cross the border like they have been for years, pull into the middle of Baghdad and pickle it off...

It is the easiest, and most cost effective bang for the buck out there...No need to integrate the device to a ballistic missile, or try to put a timer on a container bound for some foriegn port...

It would have the desired effect of eliminating all the work we’ve done in that country, discredit us, and the whole world will basically come unglued that it actually happened...And we (USA) did nothing about it...

At least that is the way we will be portrayed...And with the current leadership caste we have, we’ll certainly apologize for the massive mistake.../sarc

Not to mention that the world economy will probably collapse because no one will want to do business for a while, no one will want to live near an urban area in some countries, it may even spark some things we would really rather not have to deal with while trying to repair the situation at the same time...

Its going to be a mess, and all it takes is someone committed to pulling the trigger...

Thank You Mr. ZERO. . . . . .

This is one thing that can legitimately be laid at the feet of GWB. What did he do about Iran's nuke program for eight years other than send strongly worded messages??

Or the back of a pickup truck.

We all make the mistake of thinking they need a high tech delivery system. In SWA, with the amount of smuggling they have, low-tech ground/sea delivery is easy.

Why lay this at George Bush’s feet?

We are one country and we are not near as close to Iran as the other countries who should be worried about this.

President Bush had no coalition to stop Iran from building a nuke. He had Russia saying nothing or helping Iran with it, He had Britain and france afraid of their shadows as their own countries were being infiltrated with Muslims.

What was he supposed to do alone. We attacked Iraq and they crapped all over him, said he lied to do it, what would they have done had he attacked Iran? We have Britains and France who were part of Iraq war, We and they all know where the IED’s that are blowing off the legs of our troops are coming from. They and the technology for them come from Iran, and yet they do nothing.

The POS we have now in the White House isn’t about to do anyhting about his Muslim friends, but the mess we are in with the nukes is Bush’s fault. I am afraid the mess is attributable to a lot of people who sem to feel it won’t happen if we just ignore it.

Bush may share the blame, but Europe,Russia,China, and the N. Koreans are just as much at fault and more so.

It appears evident to me that Russia and China feel they can survive the Nuclear holocaust that is on the way, and N. Korea just doesn’t give a damn. Britain and France are just hoping it will go away.

For all the good reasons you give, nothing will be done about Iran's nukes unless/until the USA goes it alone.

This applies to Bush, Obama, and whoever replaces Obama.

So I think it's fair to criticize any American president for talking tough and then doing nothing.

With all the talk about the 2012 elections, it seems many of us have kind of forgotten or ignored a key fact:

We actually have to get to 2012 as a functioning nation first. With Obama in the White House and many other factors, that is not guaranteed.
