EL PASO - El Paso police said that a man who tried to rob several people at a bar got stabbed, instead.

This happened last night at the AMF bar on Montana in East El Paso.

According to police, a 20-year-old Hispanic man pulled out a gun and demanded wallets and cell phones from six customers who were in the bar's patio. Then, the customers attacked the gunman and one of them stabbed him with a pocketknife.

Police later discovered that the robber was using a BB gun that resembles a semi-automatic weapon.

We're told the person who stabbed the robber will not be arrested; police said the person was acting out of self-defense.

Besides the suspect, who is expected to be ok, no one else was injured. His mug shot will be released once he's booked into jail.

The really sad thing is that this even has to be mentioned. In TX, the guy could have had his head blown off by one of the customers and, in my mind, there still shouldn't be a question of self-defense.

I thought that it was only toy guns that have the orange tip.

I suppose texans can easily tell a real gun from a bb gun.

Technical note, that while he was stabbed with a pocket knife, had the man with the knife had a serious knife, as well as a little experience, he would have had profound lethal advantage over the gunman, even if it had been a real gun.

Bottom line is that this is a crappy situation for using a gun, unless you are a real expert. Multiple potential targets, multiple ranges, all of which are too close, or far enough away to get cover—meaning a fast closing time for the former group and maneuver for the latter group. Attention is unfocused, which is bad.

Add to that the CC gun or knife advantage to the crowd. And that knife wounds have greater lethality, even with emergency treatment, unless the bullet hits a narrow range of “one-shot-kill”.

And this is freaking El Paso, where the odds of meeting someone with knife skills is way higher than most of the rest of the US.

Years ago I was a juror for a rape trial in which the rapist wielded a 1911 pattern BB gun.

The prosc brought in a ballistics expert to explain the damage that could and could not be done by a working version of that BB gun which, at least by the time the detectives got their hands on it, was non-operational.

I found it an interesting bit of technical data, though unnecessary for determination of guilt or innocence. The victim had cooperated only upon fear of death at gunpoint.

Too bad the defender in the current case didn’t make a Darwin Award of the robber’s BB gun.

Oops, forgot to take a Magic Marker and blacken the tip, as I have read others have done. Another Nanny-State "safety" feature that didn't work out.
