The only reason you would threaten but not sue would be if there was some grain of truth in the book. Which tells me that she probably did have a youthful fling with the basketball player. The whole thing would get pretty messy beyond that.

I don't agree. The media circus that would result might well be enough to keep a mother from pursuing a lawsuit.

The only reason you would threaten but not sue would be if there was some grain of truth in the book. That's not what is happening here. The letter was to inform Random House of an intent to file a lawsuit and ordered them NOT to destroy ANY correspondence pertaining to the book.
