I say just send our SEAL teams up over their gunwhales on a night when there is a new moon, and have a fast attack craft standing by with a chipper/shredder mounted on the stearn. That way, after the fast attack craft pulls up alongside the Iranian vessel, the SEALs can just drop the bodies into the hopper and feed the fish. Scuttle the vessel with several charges after it has been moved quite a ways from the intercept point.

With all of that done, if anyone says anything... You just say "Hell, Captain Henry Morgan ain't dead - he was just restin' for a spell."

I don't know exactly what is Iran's purpose for doing such but it's not likely to directly confront the American Navy nor is our navy likely to sink them.

I suspect it is a projection of power. Just showing they can do it and get away with it. Their target audience is not us but other middle eastern nations. Although annoying us is a nice bonus.

It is a show of power to influence local events present and future and impress other Islamic Nations.

Dunno. Clinton wouldn’t let our guys in dangerous waters with ammo on the top deck. That’s how the USS Cole was hit.

Read this and associated links.

All you need is a small fission device: it is the gamma ray flux which causes Compton scattering (electrons knocked out of the atoms / molecules in the upper atmosphere) which travel at relativistic speeds, and interact with the Earth's magnetic field.

The design of the bomb, and the casing, can enhance the proportion of the weapon's energy which is released as gamma radiation: and by designing the case properly one can focus the gamma rays "downward" to the ground.

A fission weapon, according to these sources, will still be quite a good source of EMP: it is not directly a function of notional yield.

Cheers!

they have a number of small, decrepid looking diesel subs in the Iranian navy that looks like water would leak in the screen doors.

Remember that in the Fall of 1941, the “Imperial Japanese Navy” was the punchline of a lot of jokes.

Until one day in December...

within 2 weeks after the bomb goes off, panic will set in. This scenario is truly horrible, and unavoidable I believe.

Disease, lack of food at the end of 2 weeks, scary

[ Paging Dr. Paul, Paging Dr. Paul. Can we load the muskets yet? ] A letter of Marque will clear this right up.....

Sure. I figure I can mount a cannon up front on my bow rider. Yup, that'll do it. ;-)

most of the bums posting on this thread don’t know what an EMP attack is...

Elecro-Magnetic Pulse. Can be kinda nasty and would plunge us back into the mid-nineteenth century.

And that Imperial Japanese Navy of 1941 would beat the Iranians of today.

To truly project power with any type of a chance to stay in the area, you need at least one functional aircraft carrier. Last time I checked, the Iranians don’t and won’t have one.

If they want to play frigate Navy it will be an exciting 15 minutes once the shooting starts.

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

I read it and it scared the crap out of me. IMHO it would be worse than a bio, chemical or nuke strike. In one seconds time our massive technology driven society would be sent back to the stone age.
