>>>>>>Actually, Rudy was in the position in 2007 that Romney is now - choice of the East Coast establishment GOP. McCain simply stepped into the opportunity presented by Rudy's fall and ran with it.

Yes and no. Front runner candidate, yes. National establishment GOP candidate, no. That was always good old JohnnyMac. Fred knocked off Rudy and we conservatives were overjoyed. Then Fred found out he couldn't take his pal Gentleman Jack Daniels on the road with him. Looking back now you can see that Rudy was running a poor campaign that was running out of energy and out of cash. Fred just drove the stake in and ended it a bit early.

>>>>>Many Perry supporters are running around saying just that. They are calling Perry critics Dem or Romney plants and saying the only choice is Perry versus Romney. It's off-putting.

I've not seen much of that. But I don't see everything posted either. My take on that is this. There are posters ignorant of Perry's real record. With some unwilling to do any research or give the benefit of the doubt on nuances related to the sub-issues of immigration. Some folks are just being pigheaded when it comes to Perry. They get upset and throw around hyperbole, half truths and falsehoods that make them look out of touch. Temper tantrums will solve nothing. As we all know, FR has seen its share of political operatives in past, both from the loony left and angry right.

I appreciate your take on Romney and his persona non grata status on FR. For the most part, its been that way since 2007. We both know the hostility towards Willard has died down. You can see it in replies on both the pro-Perry and the anti-Perry threads. The handwriting is on the wall. Can't ignore the obvious. Perry supporters are meeting heavy resistance from honest folks and from the malcontent contingency who just hate Rick Perry. Nothing but stinkin-thinkin.

OK, I have repeatedly heard him state his opposition to open borders. Now you are not to be believed on anything. Why can't we all make our points without trying to mislead? This is serious business.

Would you believe Rick Perry spoke out in favor of open borders if it was a speech he gave and that is available on his own official website?

http://governor.state.tx.us/news/speech/10688/

President Fox’s vision for an open border is a vision I embrace, as long as we demonstrate the will to address the obstacles to it. An open border means poverty has given way to opportunity, and Mexico’s citizens do not feel compelled to cross the border to find that opportunity. It means we have addressed pollution concerns, made substantial progress in stopping the spread of disease, and rid our crossings of illicit drug smuggling activity. Clearly we have a long way to go in addressing those issues. At the same time we must continue to deepen our economic ties, expanding opportunities for Mexican and U.S. companies to do business on both sides of the border. The outlook is promising, even if the road to prosperity is a long one. We share a bond as neighbors, and we find our culture north of the Rio Grande to be increasingly defined by the strong traits of people of Hispanic descent. Texas has long enjoyed a unique identity, an identity forged by an independent spirit, and the convergence of many different peoples. We must welcome change in the 21st Century as we have in every century before it.

Today, as we look to the south, we see a rising sun. It is perched above a people whose best days are in front of them. Let us endeavor to make the most of this new day through a new dialogue. Let us work together to combat disease, expand trade and provide educational opportunities. If we do, there are no limits to what we can accomplish for the betterment of all of our citizens. Thank you, and God bless you.

Without a link, I don’t know if that was the bogus version that has been removed, or a real one.

It was from the San Antonio ISD website, here is a cached version of it:

http://web.archive.org/web/20091114153721/http://www.saisd.net/admin/curric/sstudies/mhcp/mhcproject.html

But what is clear is that it is describing the teacher seminars, NOT the class being taught in the schools to children.

I don’t remember conversations about what the teachers were being taught, only the arguments over the student curriculum. The Ouline for the STUDENT course looked fine, didn’t teach religious texts, and was pretty straightforward about the violent history of muslims in the middle east.

Those seminars are supposed to be to instruct the teachers how to teach the classes on those topics. As for a violent history of Muslims in the Middle East only being taught, that seems to go against what Perry and Aga Khan were pushing. The fact that a lot of this stuff seems to be disappearing off the web should be looked at it, and school curriculums should be examined.

When Perry's ties to Aga Khan were raised again earlier this summer on FR (once again FReepers were way ahead of the curve! Tancredo was probably reading FReep for ideas to write about), I had the attitude that it wasn't necessarily a bad thing which was my view when I had first started hearing about several years ago, because I thought better of the Aga Khan than most Muslim leaders. However I didn't realize the ties his group had to various countries and organizations, and I didn't realize he and Perry were pushing to expand teaching about Islam in our schools. It's one thing for Perry to attend a ground-breaking ceremony for a mosque, and another for him to support expanding the subject in our schools

A few years back, I remember a FReeper who was angry that their son participated in a Texas A&M honor guard for Aga Khan at Perry's request, and I kind of just blew them off and made an Aggie joke. Whoever that was, I apologize.

Thanks for posting this. I read the first paragraph and it sounds to me like Perry is hoping for a border like we share with Canada. Everything in there was good.

Please stop trying to mislead, but I do thank you for posting this.

If you thought I was talking about Perry supporting open borders with Canada, I apologize. Perry was definitely talking about open borders with Mexico and I should have posted that speech when I made the comment - you would have understood instantly he was talking about Mexico.

I definitely did know he was talking about Mexico but when one read the conditions, it described the same kind of border we share with Canada. That was what I meant.

“We’ve argued about the property rights of the land owners since day one. As well as the rights of local government to adjust or place the fence and the value of patrols.”

Regardless of who has title, as far as I’m concerned the border zone is federal, especially when we’re facing an invasion (which we’ll get if Perry’s elected).
