Anyone here have an ethics class in 8th grade??
I never has a ethics class in any school I ever attended. Ethics were taught at home.
Maybe that would be a special class in a muslim school. Of course their ethics would be a world apart from everyone elses.
We did not need such a course. We understood the concept of "Right vs. Wrong".
There was also something (so sue me) called the Ten Commandments", now outlawed.
Ethics are taught by good parents or Bible quoting Pastors, certainly no longer in schools. When the Bible was the main text book in primary schools of old, THEN ethics were certainly taught in schools.
The president grew up a Muslim. Do they teach ethics in Muslim schools?
As to his comments about grades...he is still failing.
Aristotle taught Alexander his Nichomachean Ethics while Alexander was a teenager. Aristotle is where "Patience is a virtue" comes from ... and there is much, much more.
Here's a rundown of Aristotle's spheres of human action, and associated vices, virtues and deficiencies.
The twelve spheres are fear and confidence, pleasure and pain, giving and receiving (minor), spending (major), honor and dishonor (major), honor and dishonor (minor), anger, self expression, conversation, social conduct, shame and indignation.
Associated with those spheres, Aristotle's twelve middle ground virtues are Courage, temmperance, liberality, magnificence, magnanimity, proper ambition, patience, truthfulness, wittiness, friendliness, modesty, righteous indignation.
On the excess side twelve are: rashness, licentiousness, prodigality, vulgarity, vanity, overambitious, irascibility, boastfulness, buffoonery, obsequiousness, shyness, and envy.
On the deficiency side the twelve are cowardice, insensibility, illiberality, pettiness, pusillanimity, unambitious, lack of spirit, understatement, boorishness, cantankerousness, shamelessness, and malicious enjoyment.
In the above, the mean values are virtues, and the related behaviors are vices resulting from varying too far from the means, one way or the other ...
Now THAT, is a set of ethics that should be taught to teenagers.
Put it on a blackboard and talk about it to your kids (students, too).
