Governor Beverly Perdues recent suggestion that we suspend the 2012 elections so our Representatives can focus on getting things done has caused some to question whether she is fit to hold office. After all, if you want to preserve a wayward democratic republic, its probably not the best idea to suggest that democracy is whats driving us off course.
And ever since an audio surfaced of the North Carolina Democrats remarks, her efforts at damage control a claim that she was simply indulging sarcasm have been falling short. The audio reveals that her suggestion was rendered matter-of-factly, embedded within more than a minute of almost continuous blather, which, perhaps, leads one to believe that Perdue might be well served in the future to take a breath. It never helps when your mouth is one step ahead of your brain.
But whether the Governor was serious or just possesses the worlds worst delivery is secondary, because she isnt fit to hold office either way. It isnt, however, for the reason most critics think.
The real issue here is that Perdues suggestion reflects a common fallacy: that our legislators problem is that they simply dont have enough time to legislate. This is expressed in many ways, from the Governors concern that campaigning is a distraction to that oft-heard complaint about a do-nothing Congress.

How the hey did a lib bubble head become gov in a basically conservative state?
Right, don't think it would work in USA. An armed populace, with the help of most of the military (they wouldn't support a suspension of elections would they?), would restore constitutional government and put a few people in Leavenworth.
Why do you think that they've been expanding gun control for the last 60 years? See how much it costs to get even a crappy M-60.
with the help of most of the military
I don't know about the military, they might simple not interfere. But going by other countries, the police would wholeheartedly support it. Human nature isn't any different here than it is elsewhere in the world.
When the seat belt law was passed in Michigan, it was said by the dem's that you would never get a ticket just for seat belts. Now they are giving tickets for just seat belts. It took 10-12 years from passing to ticketing...

She obviously is not.
Perdue swore an oath to "support the Constitution of the United States" and she has violated that oath by even suggesting the suspension of Congressional elections.
The U.S. Constitution does not offer any provision for setting aside elections due to hard circumstances (I checked, just to make sure) so she is calling for an extra-Constitutional measure that would be a clear violation of her oath. Even Lincoln, who faced much harder times, didn't ask for such madness.
In other words ... she could be tried for (at minimum) the violation of her oath of office.
I know not all of our people are armed, but many thousands, if not millions, are. Would they take action in the event elections are suspended indefinitely, especially presidential elections? Perhaps not, but they could and should.
with the help of most of the military
When I enters the military I swore to defend the constitution. That would be the justification for military intervention to restore the constitution. Upon reflection, not sure whether they would do it. As for police favoring a dictatorship, are you implying that they would like to be a Gestapo, especially for Obama?.
Hey, Bev, what say we just suspend women’s suffrage and eligibility to hold office... just to get rid of a few distractions hindering our legislators?
Going by history, absolutely. NOT ONCE in the history of governments going from free to despotic has any internal police force done anything but whole heartedly go along with the new regime. They aren't any different here. You can see what staunch supporters of the right to keep and bear arms the feds are. When was the last time you read of a local sheriff's department refusing to raid a house to confiscate gun?
So yes I'm sure the local police would be the first to come around to round up your guns (like the did in NYC under Dinkins) or murder you if you didn't want to give up your rights.
Good points in your post #29.
