Perry promotes his years of experience taking on illegal immigration, tries to blunt criticism
Washington Post ^ | Oct 1, 2011 | AP

Posted on 10/01/2011 8:55:43 AM PDT by Clairity

His aides believe that his decade of experience as a border-state governor bolsters his credibility on immigration and border security.

He said he vetoed a Texas bill that would have given illegal immigrants driver's licenses, helped pass a bill requiring voter identification at the polls, spent $400 million on security measures to help secure the state’s border with Mexico, and strongly opposed granting amnesty to people who illegally entered the United States.

"I'm a governor. I don't have the pleasure of standing on the stage and criticizing," Perry said. "I have to deal with these issues."

what has he done? he sent Texas rangers to the border which apprehend the illegals every day

There are 150 commissioned Rangers in the entire state of Texas and they are by no means all on the border.

Keep tap-dancing Perry. You have RINO written all over you, and it won’t come off.

The media love a circus. It's great for ratings.

Please take a look at the field of candidates. Who is running with executive experience that can beat obama.

Do we really want another northeast blue blood Pub as our nominee?

You're right, that's exactly what we don't want, another George Bush. Being from Connecticut, that's what he was and he gave us millions of illegals.

There's no reason to believe that Perry will be any different. He's against almost every effective measure to solve the problem, although he does talk a good game, just like Bush. But then if he actually made illegals leave as Alabama and Arizona are doing then cheap labor lovers and political donors such as Bob Perry might complain.

E-Verify and az style laws, along with fence, would make a difference.

Perry opposes common sense approaches to combat illegals.

Jose perry, run for pres of Mexico

Well it’s NOT because of the college tuition breaks and if you say it is, you are a heartless person that just doesn’t want to help people because they have a different sounding last name!

So if Cain is not the nominee, he is for...??

Is he for Obama over Perry, if Perry were nominated?

I say the evidence supports that he’s a Romney man. I just now saw where he endorsed Romney in 2008.

And by his statement, he would sit out the general or vote for a third party if Perry were to be our candidate...??

Something is wrong here...

Perry wants to secure the border, so illegals can’t get in. Then all the other measures are not necessary.

Conversely, you can use thousands of other measures, they are pretty much useless, if you don’t secure the border.

Perry wants to do the only effective measure: stop them at the border, by using surveillance and boots on the ground. He should be praised, not attacked for it.

Still nothing reassuring other than he plans on employing those educated illegals.

It’s easy for some people who have not been dealing with these problems to second guess the decisions of the people of Texas, their legislature and the Governor. Its also very easy for the other candidates to demagogue the issue in order to beat up on Gov Perry. I wonder what they would do if faced with the same choices that Texas faces as a border state. And I don’t mean what they may say through rhetorical statements made in the heat of a campaign.

Myth Romney is proving he’s as big a demagogue as our PreZero is.

11 years as governor and yet Texas is one of three states with an INCREASE in the number of illegals.

Where did you get that statistic?

Every state in the Union has had an increase in illegal immigration in the last 11 years.

You cannot fix the illegal immigration problem without repairing welfare. I am voting for the person who is experienced in jobs growth. Texas economy is far more positive than most states in the country. Perry is a very popular governor as well, so he must have done something right? Texans do not want to lose Perry. I vote for experience in the above First Factor--an environment where jobs will grow which means less government interference, regulations etc. Maine is seeing this for the first time in decades--it works.

Herman Cain knows about rebuilding an economy and is well spoken, intelligent; already a leader or he would not be in the "play-offs". I really don't what Cristie has really achieved to better NJ, like other newly elected Republican governors.

Letterman has already started with the "fat" jokes saying Christy will need to choose a Secretary of Cake. But how's the abs thingy photoshoot in Hawaii working for ya, one might reply? Clinton did not take care of his health til he was forced to, Bush is still mountain biking.

However, when you have a vibrant economy you will have more service jobs as there is more money to spend..you know the jobs Americans won't do because they can make out better on welfare programs.

The government hasn't won the war on drugs which impairs job performance--if Americans want to be users, then they in many cases they blindly support terror.

Illegal immigration bothers me on the health factor mostly..TB, other diseases once thought eradicated, now reappearing.

A "Useful" education is also needed to be job worthy.

Palin will not run. People need to realize anyone can beat Obama--there is no such thing as a perfect candidate, so Republicans need to relax.

“Boots on the ground” is a joke because they can be removed or juggled around with a snap of a finger. A permanent structure such as a fence guarded by border patrol is the only true effective solution along with cutting off benefits and the job magnet, all of which Perry opposes.

If Perry had worded his response differently and highlighted again and again and again what he has done to combat illegal immigration- his foes , ie: the other potential nominees and the FOX News anchors wouldn’t have been able to Alinsky him.

Great point.

Perry did not help himself in the "debates" but the other thing is he is looking forward to the general election. Apparently, he has enough political savvy to know we need at least 30% of the Hispanic vote and at least 50% of the single "moderate" white women in order to win. The other candidates are just looking at the primaries and will say anything that benefits them now. However, in the general election they will be boxed into positions that will cost them key voting blocks.

Does anyone believe that a northeast blue blood is going to aggressively work to solve illegal immigration?

If Perry is so tough on border security.... as he proclaims, then why didn’t he do the following:

(1.)... Demand that Texas House Speaker Joe Straus “fast track” the sanctuary city bill through committee process to a house vote?

(2.)... Propose his own Arizona style immigration bill? He hid while Texas Reps Debbie Riddle and Leo Berman’s very tough immigration bills died in committee process.

Perry is a master at looking like he’s doing a lot on border security while ensuring that his big $$$$ GOP donors
have a steady supply of cheap labor illegals.

Jan Brewer ought to return his nuts. She’s carrying them around in her purse.
