Washington (CNN) -- The government mental hospital where John Hinckley Jr. has spent most of the last 30 years since he shot and tried to kill President Ronald Reagan is asking a federal court to allow Hinckley's eventual release to live with or near his aging mother in Williamsburg, Virginia.
The prosecution, in its own filing with the court on Friday, described Hinckley as "a man capable of great violence" and said his mental condition has not improved to the point of eliminating concerns "that this violence may be repeated."
U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman has scheduled up to a week of court hearings on the issue to start November 28, the Monday after Thanksgiving.
Hinckley is now 56. He was committed to St. Elizabeths Hospital in 1982 after a jury found him innocent by reason of insanity in the shooting of President Reagan and three others, including the president's severely wounded press secretary, James Brady.
The hospital's lawyers and doctors filed their motion under seal, withheld from the public, when they asked at the end of this past July that Hinckley eventually be placed on "convalescent leave."

Easy.
Hinckley didn’t kill a US President. Jodie Foster turned lesbian because of that.
If Hinckley could actually succeed and kill the current US President, Jodie Foster would renounce her lesbianism and become Hinckley’s lover.
QED-I (I for “insane”)
**If hes all better now and no longer insane, then return him to criminal court and have him properly sentenced.**
Exactly, well said.
A D.C. jury will never convict a defendant who shot a Republican president.
Besides, he can’t be tried twice for the same crime.
My letter informing him that President Obama has been bragging about how he’s lured Jodie away from the lesbian life style ...
To: John Hinckley
From: Mrs. Nancy Reagan
My family and I wanted to drop you a short note to tell you how
pleased we are with the great strides you are making in your recovery.
In our country’s spirit of understanding and forgiveness, we want you
to know that we bear no grudge against you for shooting President
Reagan.
We are fully aware that mental stress and pain could have driven you
to such an act of desperation. We’re confident that you will soon make
a complete recovery and return to your family to join the world again
as a healthy and productive man.
Best wishes,
Nancy Reagan & Family
P.S. While you have been incarcerated, Barack Obama has been banging
Jodie Foster like a screen door in a tornado. You might want to look
into that.
I didn’t say re-try and convict him.
I said sentence him properly.
He was found not guilty (by reason of insanity). I don’t see how he could be sentenced to prison based on the trial outcome.
Yes I realize this, Clarence Darrow.
I’m simply lamenting the injustice of the original verdict.
