Washington (CNN) -- The government mental hospital where John Hinckley Jr. has spent most of the last 30 years since he shot and tried to kill President Ronald Reagan is asking a federal court to allow Hinckley's eventual release to live with or near his aging mother in Williamsburg, Virginia.
The prosecution, in its own filing with the court on Friday, described Hinckley as "a man capable of great violence" and said his mental condition has not improved to the point of eliminating concerns "that this violence may be repeated."
U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman has scheduled up to a week of court hearings on the issue to start November 28, the Monday after Thanksgiving.
Hinckley is now 56. He was committed to St. Elizabeths Hospital in 1982 after a jury found him innocent by reason of insanity in the shooting of President Reagan and three others, including the president's severely wounded press secretary, James Brady.
The hospital's lawyers and doctors filed their motion under seal, withheld from the public, when they asked at the end of this past July that Hinckley eventually be placed on "convalescent leave."

If he’s all better now and no longer insane, then return him to criminal court and have him properly sentenced.
I second the motion.
(More than likely if he is allowed out, he’ll murder his mother!)
AMEN
If. God forbid, Hinckley is released and strikes again, those responsible for advocating and/or effecting his release should be sentenced to terms of imprisonment mandated for the crimes committed, to be served in the same sort of facility designated for such crimes.
I'm all for releasing Hinkley. From 30,000 ft.

I think the judge should set him free - just so long as he has to live with the judge.
clinton appointee. the guy could walk . . .
He should be released from the mental hospital.....and then sent to a federal prison.
Why? Do they need to make room for the 0bama administration?
Will Jody Foster now get full time protection?
anyone and everyone involved in an assasination attempt should never again see the light of freedom. They not only tried to kill a person, they tried to kill our way of life. I was attacked as a corrections officer and that was the jist of my testimony against the perp....he was a juvenile and got 10 years in the adult system for his antics!! good riddance
Exactly what I was thinking. There was a thread earlier about some guy who was released from a mental institution who went home and killed both his parents.
I don’t believe in the insanity defense anyway. Put him in prison where he’s belonged for all these years.
He could very well try to go after another US President.
I think we all need to seriously consider the ramifications of that.
Yeah, but now that Jodie Foster has come out as a lesbo, what would be his motivation?
