Don't call Texas Gov. Rick Perry soft on immigration, said the chair of his state's Democratic Party.
"His anti-Latino record, I think, speaks for itself," said Texas Democratic leader Boyd Richie during a visit to the New Hampshire Democratic Party headquarters Friday. "To say that he's soft on immigration is just flat wrong."
The Texas governor has been soundly pummeled by conservatives for his support of a 2001 bill that granted in-state college tuition to the children of some illegal immigrants....
Richie said in an interview Friday that he gave the governor credit for passing the bill - a move which, as Perry has repeatedly told audiences, would keep those students "off the government dole" and which received overwhelming support in the state legislature.
But Richie pointed to Perry's push earlier this term to censure so-called "sanctuary cities" that protect illegal immigrants as an example of his hard-line on immigration.
He also cited Perry's support for a more rigid voter identification bill - which Democrats believe will lower voter turnout among minorities - as evidence of his position.

I just returned in my spaceship from another world after presenting this logic to them: FYI, nine out of ten citizens of the planet Pretzel agree that rewarding bad behavior is the best way to discourage future bad behavior. (I ate the tenth one.)
But it sure is encouraging to me to hear a Democrat attempting to assure conservatives that this former Democrat is just too darned conservative.
Because the ones who get in-state tuition have to be on the path to citizenship. Despite what everyone seems to believe (mainly because Perry sucks at defending himself) the in-state tuition bill does not grant blanket tuition to all illegals. They have to qualify and the number one requirement is that they must be working for their citizenship. They also have to have graduated from a Texas high school and have lived here for three years like everyone else. The reason for the three year requirement is because our Jr. Colleges and State Universities are supported by property taxes and sales taxes as there is no state income tax. What that means is that those illegals have paid into the the college fund by being renters and consumers in the State of Texas. It is not a free ride or a hand out. You are right, if they don't get it the degree will do them no good in Texas or the rest of the United States.
However, by becoming educated tax paying citizens instead of hidden day labors hanging out in a Home Depot parking lot, they remove themselves as burdens to Texas Tax payers who are otherwise forced to house them, provide them medical care and educate them by the US Government who wont let us throw them out or stop them from coming.
He is both too soft on immigration, and too harsh on it at the same time.
Ultimately, he is responsible for his own success or failure, and he has made several mistakes. Given the almost unprecedented nature of what he has been up against, however, I don't think the poor guy ever stood a chance. In recent memory, only Sarah Palin stands out as someone who has faced similar levels of venom from both liberals and some GOPers alike.
He is a day late and a Dollar short.
Someone should bring up the anti-legal record of the whole Democrat Party.
Well, OK, Mr Bigheart.......maybe one illegal identity would be off the dole (/snix).
The rest of their identities would still be riding the US gravy train, wiring US tax dollars home, retiring to Mexican beachfront condos........as US govt checks roll in to each identity.
So the Dems see Perry as anti-Latino and the nativists, along with the malcontents, see Perry as pro-illegal. Two fringe opinions and neither is right. Truth is, Perry is somewhere in between. Not the ideal candidate on immigration, but not the enemy either.
Here we have it again letting a liar Dim choose the language. Perry is strong and realistic on Border control. That doesn’t entitle the Dimicrat the power to change that to anti-latino.
Perry hasn’t been altogether bright about educating illegals and their children, but that sure shoots a huge hole in this anti-latino crap they are getting away with.
They hate it when Rinos rob Marxist international territory from them.

Our southwestern border and illegal aliens problems are a real Gordion’s knot. You probably know how that problem was solved. The thing that concerns most of us is Governor Perry seems to have a `me too’ attitude about it, along with his predecessors. Why don’t the criminals among us have to wait in line like the rest of the world? Why should they be rewarded? You know what happens when you start feeding cats—you get more cats.
But as odd as this may seem, if the election were tomorrow I’d probably vote for Gov. Perry. Or Cain. The man grows to fit the job usually, not this last time.
Our jobs as national rank-and-file conservatives—from all parts of the United States, not just the Lone Star state—is to let his people know what we hope he will do.
That’s a fair mix between Burke’s `vote your conscience’ and `pure’ democracy: `We voted 51-49 for you to do this,” I think.
His supporters need thicker skin and should keep that in mind. Less heat & rhetoric, fewer pictures of the Gov shooting & roping and castrating bulls, and “If you can do it, it ain’t braggin’” and a lot more of, “Here’s what he’s done for Texas, here’s how it’s replicable for the country & here’s what he’ll do.”
As it is we’ve seen a tongue-tied, dyslexic Gary Cooper `ayup’ Marlboro Man Texan—and we’ve seen this movie before.
He should be eating Romney alive, if he’s going to take on the baritoned, empty suit TOTUS.
Tomorrow, Perry. Twice? Who knows. I doubt that he could wrap things any worse around the tractor axle then they already are. Maybe Cain. Ain’t pluralism great?
