KABUL, Afghanistan, Oct. 7, 2011 A combined Afghan and coalition patrol killed a Taliban leader who opened fire on them in the Tagab district of Afghanistans Kapisa province yesterday, military officials reported.
The leader is considered the main improvised explosive device facilitator in northern Tagab, officials said, and also is responsible for multiple attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout Kapisa province.
An Afghan child was killed and another was wounded during the engagement. The children were hidden in the same room as the leader, officials said.
In other news from Afghanistan yesterday:
-- In Helmand provinces Nahr-e Saraj district, a combined patrol killed several insurgents, including an insurgent leader known lethal-aid facilitator who is directly responsible for organizing attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. The force also seized and destroyed 99 pounds of refined opium, seven artillery rounds, small arms and ammunition.
-- A combined patrol detained numerous insurgents in Kandahar provinces Maiwand district and seized and destroyed small arms and ammunition.
-- In Kandahar provinces Shah Wali district, a combined patrol killed several insurgents and detained several others after being engaged with rocket-propelled grenade, machine-gun and small-arms fire.
-- A combined patrol detained an insurgent in Nimroz provinces Khash Rod district and seized and destroyed bomb components.
-- In Zabul provinces Shah Joy district, a combined patrol detained several insurgents and seized and destroyed a machine gun, two pistols and bomb components.
-- A combined patrol in Ghazni provinces Gelan district seized and destroyed four grenades, two fuses and mortar charges.
