Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Saturday denounced "poisonous language" against faiths as he grappled with a flare-up over religion sparked by a prominent supporter of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, his rival. Perry steered well clear of that simmering issue and pushed another hot button instead: Social Security.

At an event in Iowa later Friday, Perry was asked if he believes Mormonism is a cult. "No," Perry said....
So far, none of Romney's rivals has directly attacked his faith _ and Romney has dismissed the issue in interviews. "The great majority of Americans understand that this nation was founded on the principle religious tolerance and liberty so most people do not make their decision based on someone's faith," he said earlier this year.
But Perry's sudden entry into the race _ he announced his candidacy in August _ forced the Romney campaign to go on offense. Perry raised $17 million in the first six weeks of his campaign and is building infrastructure to challenge Romney across the primary map, and particularly in Iowa and South Carolina, where evangelical voters are large and influential segments of the primary electorate.
And while Perry's religion stayed out of race at first, the overt and political nature of his faith was bound to change that.
He has deep ties to evangelical Christian leaders, particularly in the South. In early August, Perry convened a prayer rally that drew more than 20,000 people to a football stadium in Houston. While his advisers insist his appearance was not political, Perry attended fundraising dinners for the event as part of his official schedule as governor, and he hit on political themes during his appearance there.

IMHO it would be wise not to attack someones faith unless he attended a church for 20 years with Jeremiah Wright as the preacher spewing all sorts of trash.
Looks like he insulated himself so well he nearly finished last.
I don’t get the Ron Paul win!
I don’t know how many more gaffs Perry can take.
I would think his campaign would have reviewed the pastor’s introduction before he took to the stage.
But then maybe Perry did this purposefully. If so, I think it has backfired.
Time will tell.
Synthetic anger from a man whose religion views the rest of us as apostates, whores of Babylon, gracers, etc.
Why don’t you start with your own religion and its adherents?
Oh, that’s right, you can’t very well do that as the basis for your religion is that “all others are wrong”.
Irony, huh?

Agreed. And the way Perry thanked Jeffress after his introduction doesn’t help him either.
Paster Jeffress, I want to say Thank You for a rousing introduction, he, a... he knocked it out of the park, as we like to say... and um, a fellow whom, on any given Sunday, is, a... working with ten thousand, uh, Texans in his, in his Church, so, um, I just again, want to say thank you, to, a, a, quite a leader, uh...
And Bill Bennett really took Jeffress to task, by name, on the same state. This is a great speech!!

I would suspect that almost any Baptist minister would have the same view as this Baptist minister.
Therefore all Baptists are bigots and everyone at the Value Voters Summitt are bigots according to you. Perry should never attended right?
FUMR!! Baby murdering scumbag.
Mitt Romney: We do have tough gun control laws in Mass. I support them and will not chip away at them.
But even in the case of Hussein the average American voter didn’t mind, judging by what happened in 2008.
Come on...Ron Paul has all his thugs and thuggeets bused in to skew the polls. They are paid well to do that. Last election cycle the exact same thing happened. That is why straw polls are worthless.

Jeffress made his comments later, not during his introduction or with Perry -- because he knew it would not fly there. Perry would have not been set up like that and Jeffress knew better than to try.
The arrogance of that man is beyond belief. The sad thing is some folks will look at him as a victim in this.
FUMR
He also made his comments before, many many times, in similar and worse rhetoric.
Perry should have known better than to sign off on having him introduce him.
I am inclined to believe this was his intent the whole time, given the audience at the Summit.
Perry is fast becoming the new Huckabee.
He didn't say it during his introduction and Romney playing the victem card and attempting to pin this on Perry is causing everyone to laugh.
