The British made a terrible mistake of forcing the South and North of Sudan in one union.

Southern Sudanese have much more in common with Ugandans and Kenyans. They’ll do just fine.

I hope so. Do you know if they're developing any kind of market economy?

There is a fascinating book (To the Heart of the Nile by Pat Shipman) about slavery in the Ottoman empire, and the British attempt (with the support of the Khedive of Egypt) to stop the Arab slave trade in the Sudan in the 19th Century. The main character is Lady Florence Baker, a blond of Hungarian origin, who was raised and sold as a slave in Vidin, Bulgaria; but ended up married to Sir Samuel Baker and accompanied him when he discovered Lake Albert as one source of the Nile.
