Fed up with lunch: How one teacher went undercover to expose state of the nation's school food
Daily Mail ^ | 10/10/11 | Wil Longbottom

Posted on 10/10/2011 1:02:37 PM PDT by Nachum

As a mother, the nutritional needs of her own son would always have been on her mind.

But for one woman, teaching in a Chicago elementary school brought home just how important meals were for growing children, and how badly they were being let down.

Sarah Wu, 34, a speech pathologist working in public schools in the city, began a blog in January 2010 in which she described the school lunch every day for a year.

She secretly photographed each meal, and then described the taste and texture of each dish for her site, Fed Up With Lunch.

In it, she reveals how a couple of bites of one peanut butter and jelly sandwich made her sick, describes eating 'mystery' meat patties and unknown reheated vegetables at her school.

Mrs Wu began her project after she bought a school lunch when she ran out of time to pack her own.

"Wasn’t there a school (or was it a state?) that banned children from bringing their own food to eat since it may not be nearly as healthy as the food the school served? I wonder how that’s working out..."

Doesn't matter. It is about power and control through conditioned dependency - not healthy eating.

When I was in school, whenever the cafeteria food was Pizza, I used to say that the school couldn’t afford pepperoni so we got a “salt and cheeze” pizza. Even as a kid the salt was overwhelming.

I’m sure she’s a “progressive” so if she gets the America that she and the Occupy Wall Street crowd want, we’ll all be eating mystery meat and unknown vegetables—when we can get them! Most of the time, we’ll be eating bread and rice with a tuber of some sort. Liberals are not just a political rival anymore. They are the enemy of the United States and should be treated as such. Muslim terrorists are just a distraction compared to the damage these people are causing.

This is what you get when you buy into the misanthropic idea that “It takes a village to raise a kid.” Too many believe the government should take over their responsibilities, from raising and teaching their children to giving them a no-work job at high pay. Be an adult and take on your own responsibilities, the rest of us are overloaded in our own lives!

I guess that my neighbor, which has a lot more money than I do, should be forced to bring grocery’s to my house so my kids can eat better? I don’t think he would go for that but I guess our government could force him to pay higher taxes so that would happen.

Thanks!! Uh, did anyone notice the NEWSPAPER this was in?

The Daily Mail in the UK, NOT a Chicago or any American paper that I’ve heard about.

My high school back in the 60s had grub cooked up by Mexican nuns. They made some awesome lunches.

Wow, my Mom made me a sandwich every day for school. If I wanted something else from the cafeteria, I, get this, paid for it with my own money. And since they had to please actual customers, the cafeteria produced pretty decent food.

I know, it's an amazing concept.

Bad school lunches were my generation’s introduction to LIFE. Every piece of meat was a mystery as were all the vegetables. Then there were the awful technicolored jello desserts.

All of this was better than my mother’s health food lunches which consisted (everyday) of sandwiches made with whole wheat and greasy natural peanut butter. Yuck!

I must confess to liking institional food. Probably junk but tasty. Burgers with yellow mustard and a white bun. A mound of Starched rice with butter and brown sugar. Oh, and apple crisp.

1-I didn’t think it was possible for school lunches to get worse in 50 years, but they have.

2-Isn’t it ironic for a Brit publication to be criticizing anybody’s cooking?

Another scam if investigated would find Graft and kick Backs for Garbage that is fed to the Kids. Another Government boondoggle costing taxpayers Billions for garbage.
But dont forget its for the Children

IF you don’t like what they are feeding your little darling- get up 15 minutes earlier & make your little darling a PBJ sandwich & put it in a brown paper bag with an apple & a bottle of water.

End of your problem.

Quit making YOUR problem everyone’s problem.

My 13 year old grand daughter flat out refuses to eat school food and packs her lunch, while my 11 year old grand son doesn’t want a packed lunch ever. G/daughter won’t even buy the school’s milk, she packs a small bottle of water.

we were served breaded, reconstituted turkey patties

I remember that! They put gravy on it so we’d think it was chicken fried steak.

Reminds me of the factory in Atlas Shrugged which had everyone paying for dental work for employees children.

One kid was particularly hampered by her God-given dental work. The company was deducting more & more money from the employees to keep paying for this kid’s dental work.

Finally one employee goes berserk, quits the job & punches the kid’s dental work into the middle of the next week.

Yes, and I love church lady food. Bet you could get that done if the schools were run by churches like they should be.

If you cannot feed them-——DON’T breed them.

When I was in Grade School (1st - 6th) the school closed for lunch and we all had to go home to eat.

In Junior High (7th - 9th) and High School (10th - 12th) the lunches were pretty good.

My High School allowed us off the school grounds for lunch so I mostly went to a nearby burger joint or hopped in a friend's car and went to Burger King.

We sent our children to a private school where the cook also had her own catering business. The food there was excellent.
