Murtha tribute unveiled in Johnstown

By Richard Robbins, TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Tuesday, October 11, 2011

A statue unveiled on Monday in Johnstown of the late John P. Murtha evoked vivid memories of the longtime congressman who in his lifetime encountered both criticism and praise for his twin devotions, national security and domestic economic development projects for his sprawling Western Pennsylvania constituency.

Rep. Mark Critz, the man who took Murtha's place in Congress, said in the wake of the devastating Johnstown flood of 1977, his former boss "picked up the (Johnstown) economy and stuck it on his shoulders."

One of his achievements, Critz said, were new water and sewer lines and other district-wide infrastructure improvements that totaled $2 billion.

Murtha, a Marine Corps combat veteran of the Vietnam War who grew up in Mt. Pleasant, served in Congress from 1974 until his death in February 2010. For much of that time, he either chaired or was the ranking member of the House panel that oversaw Defense spending.

In time, Murtha became the unofficial dean of the Pennsylvania delegation to Congress, his last-row seat on the House floor a gathering place for Democrats and some Republicans.

Should have stuck it in the Murtha Airport.

A real statue would have the hand rotated ninety degrees, catching all the graft he conned out of our treasury! There's a couple more photos at the source, along with more bloviating.

If you come to Johnstown to see this thing, be sure you bring your pooch along to relieve himself.

I remain convinced that John Murtha committed treason, and I do not throw that charge around lightly.

During the Iraq War, he called for our forces there to be withdrawn “over the horizon” which was understood to mean that they would be stationed in the Philipines. We were to withdraw our forces to keep from antagonizing the locals. When actionable intelligence was received, a strike force would be launched from the Philipines in response. Does this proposal make sense to anyone? How long would it take to muster a force and to dispatch it to Iraq from the Philipines?

But, were that all, then the proposal would be merely silly, and we have an inalienable right to be silly. However, recall that Murtha had served as an intelligence officer in the Marine Corps. He had to know, therefore, that to gain actionable intelligence, you have to be convince the local population that you are there to stay and to protect them (the Marine Corps is our premier Small Wars force - as an Army brat, it pains me to acknowledge any expertise of the Marines, but facts are facts). His proposed course of action could therefore only result in our defeat in Iraq. He was knowingly espousing a strategy which would fail (but, hey, it gave cover to Ms Pelosi). If that isn’t treason, then I don’t know what is.

Seems to me the right thing for veterans living in the area to do is release hundreds of pigeons in Johnstown.

There is also a plaque honoring him at the Gettysburg museum outside of the Cyclorama display.

Can someone who knows how to do it please photoshop the 99%er crapping on the side of the police car into the picture so that he is crapping on Murtha's statue.

Maybe I'm twisted, but I could get a good laugh out of it.
