Backers of an effort to repeal a law that requires schools teach about the historical contributions of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, and people with disabilities, failed to collect enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.
The group, Stop SB48, which is named after the law, faced a Wednesday deadline to turn in just under 505,000 signatures. In an e-mail, the group said, "We thank all of you that worked so hard to provide the hundreds of thousands of signatures received. In the end, 90 days was too short a time to accomplish such a large task."
The nearly all-volunteer effort faced not only a short time frame, but a lack of significant contributions from national socially conservative organizations. The backers of the referendum noted that point in their e-mail.
"They said we did not have enough money, the commitment of enough groups, or enough days. Ultimately they were right. And in private perhaps they will ask if the effort they withheld would have made the critical difference," the e-mail stated.

The law, which takes effect Jan. 1, requires that public schools include the historical contributions of LGBT people and people with disabilities in social science instructions. Textbooks also will have to include that information.

no way was they going to get that many contributions in that short a time, it’s impossible and they had the odds totally stacked against them.

It’s not impossible. The same 90-day time limit applies to every referendum, and there are many that make it on the ballot every election cycle here. The problem is that, for whatever reason, conservatives from outside the state didn’t step up to help with this one.
That's what they want.

On the other hand I know history pretty well and the only significant homosexual I recall was Alexander the Great's father ~ and he died a drunk in a ditch murdered by his friends or something.

Never heard a word about this until just now. Was this common knowledge? Was there a post here on FR about it? Sounds like the folks fighting it did a piss poor job of spreading the word.
I think you’re right. Nobody ever heard of the petition.
Also, why didn’t the article writer contact the national social conservative groups about this issue? Why didn’t the groups speak up about this on their own? Why didn’t the reporter say — or speculate - about how many signatures were obtained?
We know nothing.

there are millions of people in CA, they did not have enough signatures to get this on the ballot in such a short time.
I helped to get the signatures on the ballot in my state and trust me you have to try very hard and it takes a lot of time to get them.
If you want to place blame on mormons from another state then go ahead but this has nothing to do with Romney or mormons in Utah this has to do with not enough time

The homosexuals came down to my town from MA and DC.
They wanted to fly their flags on our historic bridge and we said no so they sued of course.
They won for the weekend and flew them but now our commissioners made a law saying that only historic flags can now fly on that bridge.

Actually, there were a lot of women, and like all women they saw well dressed young men with fine steel swords, leather boots and woven cloth. They obviously had jobs and knew more than the local guys about what was out there in the world.
Not to say the Indian women threw themselves at the Spaniards, but the pickings were easy (if you can read between the lines in their journals).

In light of this key fact, why are you blaming the LDS? Clearly social conservatives all over the nation didn't care about the issue.
It’s not that hard to do if you’re organized and have funding necessary to pay for professional signature gatherers. It’s routine done every election cycle. These organizers just couldn’t pull it off and there was obvious apathy among social conservatives.
Unfortunately, churches were not involved in this as deeply as they should have been. A campaign to get conservative, evangelical churches to circulate petitions among congregants would have done the job in short order.

That makes no sense whatsoever. The justices who will decide Prop 8 went to school when Nixon was president. One has no bearing on the other.
If there had been material citizen opposition the drive would have gotten its numbers quickly. Yes the gay teaching requirement is idiotic but the petition drive was just as pointless. It’s San Francisco.
