Tokyo radiation hotspot 'not linked to Fukushima'
Elevated levels of radiation found in a residential area of Tokyo are almost certainly not connected to the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant, say officials.
The reading, taken on a small area of pavement in Setagaya ward, had fuelled fears about the possible effects of radiation from the plant.
But Japan's science minister said the radiation had been traced to material stored in the basement of a house.

But officials later said they were almost certain that the radiation had not come from Fukushima, after the source was traced to the basement of a nearby house, where an unknown material was being stored in old bottles in a wooden box.
Tests are now being carried out to confirm the bottles are to blame and to establish what they contain.

Godzilla's energy drink?
P!
Is it called “RADIOACTIVE MONSTER”?
Or refreshments for the H-Man...
Components for that bomb they supposedly exploded in Korea in 1945 or it’s an Aum Shin Rikyo safehouse.
In the 40’s there were many cases of radioactive materials in commerce.
In the USA there was a ceramic “sponge” that had thorium in it. You were supposed to put it in a pitcher of water to drink, and the energy from the “thoriated water” was supposed to make you healthy.
And we all know about Fiestaware plates.
This says a lot about the sensitivity and resolution of their gamma spectrometer! Probably a cryogenic ultrapure gemanium crystal (guess).
Uranium Oxide was an old ingredient in glass bottles before WWII. It gave them a ‘Vaseline’ color, and the name ‘Vaseline Glass’..........
Interesting. Probably stuff like that all over the place that never gets detected. I’d like to know which isotope it was that let them know it was not related to Fukushima.
Examples of 'Vaseline Glass'............
discarded Duncan glo-in-the-dark yo-yos?
No doubt that every single last scrap of radiation, including that from refinery fires, natural gas, cosmic rays, and old bottles, will be attributed to Fukushima for the next 100 years.
Thorium is in the mantles...
(O.O)
I wonder how much of the other stuff is false alarm or always-there-but-finally-measured?
