U.S. officials say they are certain the bizarre plot against Ambassador Adel Jubeir was real.
But some analysts say they are not. They find it unlikely that the Iranian government, or legitimate factions within, would be involved in such a tangled plot.

There is no legitimate Iranian government, nor do they have legitimate factions.
The Iranian regime CRUSHED a popular protest some several months ago, without hesitation. A government that will not listen to the reasonable complaints of its population, after what were very questionable circumstances of a recent election, is no longer a government, they have become a regime with no regard for the subjects over whom they hold sway.
Regimes have much less legitimacy than duly constituted governments, and do not rule from moral grounds, but through force of arms and implied threats that become all too real for even minor transgressions.
