Anita Perry: Husband Rick Perry "brutalized" by media, the GOP because of his faith
Dallas News ^ | 10/13/11 | Wayne Slater

Anita Perry, campaigning for husband Rick Perry in South Carolina, suggests he's been "brutalized" by the media and the GOP because of his faith. Perry is the most religiously expressive candidate in the Republican field. He hosted a seven-hour Christian prayer rally in August in advance of entering the presidential race. And at last week's Values Voters Summit, he was introduced by a Dallas Baptist pastor who said rival Mitt Romney is not a Christian and Mormonism is a cult.

Perry has suffered several extremely bad weeks, stumbling in the debates and losing the coveted endorsement of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who's backing Romney. Here, in emotional remarks at a South Carolina campaign stop, Anita Perry said:

"It's been a rough month. We have been brutalized and beaten up and chewed up in the press to where I need this today. We are being brutalized by our opponents, and our own party. So much of that is, I think, they look at him because of his faith. He is the only true conservative - well, there are some true conservatives. And they're there for good reasons. And they may feel like God called them too. But I truly feel like we are here for that purpose."

Here's the full 15-minute appearance -- a remarkable, emotional address threaded with religious references in which at one point (about 3 minutes in) she nearly breaks down, then (8 minutes in) makes the comments about the brutal campaign and later recalls someone who told Perry his political troubles were a divine test: "God is testing you because he wants you to know when you're in the White House, how you got there." It was a public show of emotion, not unlike Hillary Clinton breaking down in tears

I hope you’re right. He still has lots of die-hard supporters and if he does drop out, his endorsement will be very telling.

VERY.

Maybe Nurse Gardasil wants it more than he does.

Perry has never had a TOUGH election. There were many (myself included) who wondered how he’d manage in the wood-chipper that is a national election.

Sorry, Perry. You’re playing with the big boys, now.

Until Rick Perry has been accused of being a co-conspirator to murder, gets death threats everyday, has his family smeared and trashed, he will NEVER understand what being brutalized means

He's not going to drop out until his Texas benefactors tell him to. But since they just pooped out a bowl full of bucks for him, they may demand that he hang around and put forth just a little more effort from him than he has given so far.

But then there is the rub. They won't like it if he burns through a lot of cash and then comes back empty handed.

I think someone has bought into the hype a little too much. I haven’t seen ANYONE attacking Perry on the basis of religion - not in the LEAST. (If anyone has the right to say they’ve been attacked on the basis of religion that would be Romney, but even then it’s a bit of a stretch).

To say that Republicans are refusing to support Perry due to his Christianity is absolute insanity. I really hope this doesn’t translate into lost faith for Mrs. Perry (or for Mr. Perry). God MIGHT have called him to the race, but it may not be for the reason they think...

great point in #29.

and while i think Mrs Perry, is a very good woman, and i respect her for defending her husband,

it is precisely because Perry WON’T stand up and defend Christians against Islam, that i refuse to vote for him.

Praising Islam, quoting the Quran, and proudly signing halal bills to cut the throats of animals in Allah’s name,
is NOT standing up for Jesus.

Has Perry condemned the murder of Copts in Egypt, who are truly being “brutalized” ? The Christian women being kidnapped, raped, and forceably converted, in many Muslim countries ?

Has Perry said ANYTHING about this, recently, or at any time in the past 10 years ?
(while being endorsed by members of C.A.I.R.)

I am against Perry, precisely because he does NOT stand up for Christians, and condemn the evils of Islam, killing Christians and burning their churches.

i feel pity and pray for them. not “brutalized” Rick,
who builds Gulen Islamist schools in Texas with Taxpayer money.

If Perry is smart he’ll get his wife away from the microphones. Unfortunately, he isn’t.

Very revealing.

I think the Perrys are both hypocrites.

That’s why all the Perry supporters are now incensed, throwing tantrums, and bashing a great man like Herman Cain. They think La Raza Rick was “entitled” to the nomination.

Buying into a cult mentality will do that to you.

Perry’s rise to power in the Lone Star State——and how he did it——is the real Texas Miracle.

His homestate constituency is largely women with big hair, men in cowboy hats and boots, with no particular opinion on anything but chicken-fried steak and redeye gravy.

That may be good for Texas-—but in the outside world, voters want more than a candidate conversant in “Poultry Feed.”

Even with all of Perry’s high-priced campaign strategists, I gotta say I’m not sure this strategy of moving the wife to the forefront and having her play the victim card is smart, I think this kind of thing could very easily backfire on them.

It's not a victim card though, it's a misdirection card - she's trying to make Perry's failings about religion instead of about Perry himself. It's classic Rick Perry and it's brilliant.

Your ignorance is showing.

You are your lame little fan club are the only ones amused by it.
