For Immediate Release

KABUL, Afghanistan (Oct. 14) — A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed two insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban leader in Ghormach district, Faryab province, Thursday.

The leader moves weapons and roadside bombs, as well as, plans suicide bomb and direct fire attacks against Afghan forces in the Ghormach and Qaisar districts. He also collects taxes from local nationals and receives finances from foreign countries for insurgent activity.

During the operations two armed insurgents displayed hostile intent toward the security force, assessing an immediate threat the force fired, killing both insurgents.

North

A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed three insurgents during an operation in search of Taliban leaders in Qaisar district, Faryab province. During the operation, several insurgents were observed displaying hostile intent toward the security force. Assessing an immediate threat, the force fired, killing three insurgents. No civilians were harmed during the operation.

In Kunduz district, Kunduz province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained one insurgent during an operation in search of an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan facilitator, yesterday. The facilitator is involved in attack planning against Afghan forces in the Kunduz area.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed two insurgents and detained two suspected insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban leader in Kajaki district, Helmand province, yesterday. The leader negotiates with narcotic suppliers to provide finances for insurgent operations. During the operation the security force observed armed insurgents maneuvering to attack, assessing an immediate threat the security force engaged, killing both insurgents.

In Tarnek wa Jaldak district, Zabul province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained one suspected insurgent during an operation in search of a Taliban leader, yesterday. The leader is responsible for coordinating ambush operations, weapons trafficking and mine emplacement throughout the Zabul province.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained one suspected insurgent during an operation in search of a Taliban leader in Musa Qal’ah district, Helmand province, yesterday. The leader places mines and uses military uniforms to conduct ambush attacks against Afghan forces.

A combined Afghan and coalition force discovered a narcotics cache during an operation in Maiwand district, Kandahar province, yesterday. The security force seized 2,822 pounds (1,283 kilograms) of hashish. The drugs were safely destroyed on site. The intent of the operation is to disrupt the supply of lethal aid to insurgents in the Helmand province.

East

In Sabari district, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained numerous suspected insurgents during an operation in search of a Haqqani network leader, yesterday. The leader coordinates roadside bomb and ambush attacks and recently conducted an attack against Afghan forces in the Sabari district. The leader also oversees the transportation and distribution of mines and coordinated insurgent activity with other Haqqani leaders in the network.

In Zurmat district, Paktiya province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban leader, yesterday. The leader procures weapons and prepares roadside bombs for use in attacks against Afghan forces. The security force also seized bomb making materials during the operation.

A combined Afghan and coalition force detained multiple suspected insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban leader in Muhammad Agha district, Logar province, yesterday. The leader plans car bomb attacks throughout the region. The security force confiscated numerous rockets and bomb making materials during the operation.

I have long wondered if we would actually get more distance out of strengthening each province and each provincial government, so that we gradually narrow down the corruption and identify those able to defend themselves.
