Zachary Quinto, best known for his roles as Sylar in the TV series "Heroes" and Spock in 2009's Star Trek film, has come out as a gay man. Until now, Zachary has never publicly spoken about his sexual orientation, but opens up about being "a gay man" in a new interview with New York Magazine.
Quinto just wrapped up an eight-month run in the NYC stage revival of "Angels in America", and called the experience an eye-opener. He called his work in the off-Broadway play the "most challenging thing I've ever done as an actor, and the most rewarding."
He added:
"At the same time, as a gay man, it made me feel like there's still so much work to be done, and there's still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed."
Later on in the interview, Quinto discussed same sex marriages and the suicide of bullied gay teen Jamey Rodemeyer.
Quinto continued:
"And again, as a gay man I look at that and say theres a hopelessness that surrounds it. But as a human being I look at it and say 'Why? Where's this disparity coming from, and why can't we as a culture and society dig deeper to examine that?' We're terrified of facing ourselves."
While Zachary has played a series of gay roles, he has in the past refused to comment on his sexuality.
I work with two ‘colon cowboys’ who told me back in 2009 when Star Trek was released that the actor portraying Spock a ‘pickle chugger’.
Their gaydar went off right away.
I did not believe them but it looks like they were right.
Homo’s ALWAYS know who is straight or gay...
Dude! You got to make out with Zoe Saldana!!!
And you want to play for the other team?!
WTF?
I like Star Trek too, but any possible scenes now between Spock and Uhura will now be ruined.
There hasn’t been a decent Star Trek movie since “The Wrath of Khan”. Come to think about it, there wasn’t a good one before that either.
Something about “Star Trek” and movies just doesn’t work.
whoop.
Set phasers to STUNNING.
Set phasers to STUNNING.
I’m still waiting for an explanation on why he thinks its important that I need to know about he turd burgling behaviors.
Ick. Bring back Nemoy.
Ditto..
The fans won’t care. They didn’t care when Takei came out of the closet. It’s really a big non-issue for most of people, especially in nerd circles. If the guy’s funky eyebrows didn’t drive fans away who he’s plooking in his trailer won’t.
Well that kind of blows away the whole Vulcan “Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations”...
There’s a strange dichotomy in Hollywood when it comes to parts like Barney, the more of a sleazebag womanizer the character the more likely the actor is gay. And you’re not really supposed to take Neil Patrick Harris seriously, it’s a comedy, and pretty funny most of the time.
The movie was “Six Days Seven Nights” with Anne Heche and Harrison Ford.
Anne Heche was involved with Ellen D. at one time.
Anne came out right before that movie opened.
But then eventually she married a man. So who knows if she was confused or what happened there.
"Unfortunately, he loves Bones, Jim.
The nerds and geeks of the fan base don’t want to be labeled as “gay” they have enough issues living in their parents’ basement.
Pon Far is not about virgin sacrifice.
Like all actors or actresses that come out, this kills the gravitas of their characters. (can you say rock hudson?)
It does matter.
It matters very much to the marketing and merchandising of product.
Spock, you ignorant slut. I knew Spock was gay back in the Original series when he got spored and started singing and dancing. That alien chick was just a beard. Spock has always been too fabulous to quantify.
