Senators urge baseball to ban tobacco
Posted: Oct 18, 2011 11:58 AM by AP

WASHINGTON (AP) - Four U.S. senators and health officials from the cities hosting the World Series are urging the baseball players union to agree to a ban on chewing tobacco at games and on camera.

The senators, including No. 2 Democrat Dick Durbin of Illinois, and health officials from St. Louis and Arlington, Texas, made the pleas in separate letters, obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press. The World Series between the Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals begins in St. Louis Wednesday night.

"When players use smokeless tobacco, they endanger not only their own health, but also the health of millions of children who follow their example," the senators wrote to union head Michael Weiner. In addition to Durbin, the signers were fellow Democrats Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Senate health committee chairman of Tom Harkin of Iowa.

The senators noted that millions of people will tune in to watch the series, including children.

When I played High School baseball, I used the Luis Clemente Tiant Vega method of chewing tobacco. 1 1/2 pack bubble yum and three fingers of Red Man. Chew gum until you can lay it out in a circle. Place tobacco in center and roll into a ball. Put in refrigerator over night and whamo, you have a nice tobacco jaw breaker.

How about banning frickin’ Viagara commercials from baseball games, I can’t even let my kids watch the games because of that nonsense.

Man, if I were playing, I’d come out with huge cheek full like Rod Carew used to have.

He claimed that it helped pull the skin away from his eye so he could see better.

If they had any concern for “the chilrun”; they would just re-shecule tobacco as Schedule 1 controlled substance and be done with it. Only problem is, they are ADDICTED to the taxes as much as people are addicted to the nicotine.

Didn’t the MLB try this back in the 80s and 90s with little effect?

Opposition to tobacco is actually support for the big medicine lobby (who use tobacco, food and anything else that is natural as a scapegoat root cause of all ills which only their expensive wares can cure) and shameless pandering for votes from a perceived majority who don’t smoke. The same lobby likes forced government health solutions of all kinds with the exception of complete government takeover. The little marxist they helped to install in the WH, however, and his far-left cohorts in Congress actually went too far with the government takeover in Obamacare(tm). How idiotic the medical lobby was to think that they their business could actually benefit in the long run by a marxist regime coming to power in the U.S.

A free people are free to choose how they want to live and they then accept the consequences of their choices.

The medicine men better get back to what they’re supposed to be doing, making medicine, and start being content with 25% of GDP. If we had a free market medical industry that was truly free market, it’s total size would be more like 5% to 10% of the economy - and outcomes would be markedly better.

It was banned in the minor leagues in 1993, IIRC.

Yet another example of what happens when Gov’t overreach doesn't meet a brick wall. It not only never stops, but it gets more and more intrusive.

I notice that these ‘do-gooders’ don't have a problem with the blatant sex and violence on TV shows and advertisements that children see.

The ninney's……. Democrat Dick Durbin of Illinois, Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Tom Harkin of Iowa.
