Clerk at Del’s 24 Hour shop shoots, kills would-be robber who grabbed child

EAST NAPLES — A clerk at a landmark East Naples corner store shot and killed a man Tuesday as he attempted to rob the family-run shop and flee with her 1-year-old daughter.

The man, whose name was not released, demanded money from Elizabeth Easterly, a clerk at Del’s 24 Hour Food Store, and then grabbed a stroller that held Easterly’s baby, said Del Ackerman, the store’s owner and Easterly’s grandfather.

Easterly, 22, was alone during a shift change, running the shop with her 1- and 2-year-old daughters there, Ackerman said.

“I almost lost my two babies,” Ackerman said of his great-granddaughters.

The children were unharmed. However, a bloodied stroller remained inside the front door for hours as investigators gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses at the scene.

Around 3 p.m. a man entered the store, 2802 Thomasson Dr., “acting erratically,” Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jamie Mosbach said.

As the man made for the front door with the child, Easterly did just as she had been taught — she drew a gun and aimed for the would-be robber’s knee, Ackerman said.

Bleeding, the man was then tackled outside the front door by a store employee who was about to start his shift and was walking toward the store when the shooting happened. A pool of blood and a bloodied pair of men’s athletic shoes marked where the man was held down until deputies arrived at the scene.

The man was transported to NCH Downtown Naples Hospital. He died from his injuries.

Deputies diverted traffic at the intersection of Thomasson and Bayshore drives for two hours following the shooting. Easterly could be seen inside the store as a swarm of patrol cars and investigators blocked off the scene. Both her husband and Ackermen had left the store less than half an hour before the attempted robbery.

Across the street, Nik Merlos and Gloria Angeles huddled under a bus awning with their 14-month-old daughter as deputies took down crime scene tape. Angeles had made a quick trip to Del’s around 2 p.m.

“I knew there were creepy people around, but not that bad,” said Merlos, who has lived in the Bayshore area for seven years.

In September 2009, three masked men pistol whipped a clerk at Del’s, robbed her at gunpoint, and then stole her car. It was a blemish in nearly half a century of serving the community that didn’t stop Ackerman from opening the doors again.

“They’ve tried to clean (the neighborhood) up a lot,” said Shannon Marcum, who lives two blocks from Del’s and grew up in the neighborhood. “They’ve succeeded somewhat.”

Three hours after the shooting, Ackerman questioned whether he would bounce back. Though his granddaughter and great-grandchildren were unharmed, the threat frazzled him.

“Under these circumstances? I would consider (closing),” he said. “I’d rather have life than money.”

Known as a neighborhood stalwart, he has kept the shop open 24 hours a day for 47 years, through hurricanes and families tragedies.

But with a dozen employees working to keep the store open round the clock, too many people would be affected by shutting the doors, he decided.

As hard as we’ve worked in this town ... are we going to let one person of any kind knock my family and my babies out?” Ackerman said. “No way.”

The Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation. It is unclear if Easterly could face criminal charges in the shooting.

Arteries are outbound from the heart...Pressure is greater...

Veinous flow is back to the heart and less pressure...

The girl hit an artery, and what they have said is true, you can bleed out from that just as easy as if she had shot the guy in the pelvic/groin/upper thigh area where the aorta splits into the two major thoroughfares into the legs...

As someone in an earlier thread stated that they hoped for “more” pain as they checked out...There would not be any additional pain as you bleed out, only the pain from the wound, if you keep moving it, all you’ll do is fade away as less oxygenated blood in your body passes into and through your brain to keep you conscious...

Takes about 3-4 minutes...Depending on the size and physical shape the bleeder is...

The training was bad, of course, but if the scumbag had the one year old in his arms, shooting low was a good call.

That was me and I didnt say that. I said, "Anyways, bonus points for a chick hitting the femoral artery and letting the perp bleed out OUTSIDE of the restaurant. I hope his last 2-3 minutes of conciousness while in excruciating pain, that he found Jesus and asked for forgiveness."

Getting shot HURTS (trust me)...getting shot in the knee REALLY HURTS. It was probably just incidental to him that there was ALOT of blood and that he was getting dizzy and sleepy.

Again: We should all hope that he found Christ in his last minutes. And we should all be glad he can no longer victimize the innocents.

do NOT talk to police or reporters unless/until you’ve talked to your lawyer and said lawyer is WITH you.

Good advice, but I would add that it is ~really~ hard to do. In the aftermath of a crisis when things suddenly go from frantic to quiet, and you're coming down off an insane adrenaline surge, the urge to talk it out with somebody -anybody- is overpowering. You get the shakes from the adrenaline, and your mind is racing as it tries to make sense of what probably only lasted a few moments. Talking is part of how the brain processes the chaos and make an orderly record of what you've just been through. Again... excellent advice, but it's important to realize that people often just can't shut up, even when they know better.

The crime reports used, approved by the DOJ, does not have a listing for south of the border types. They must be listed as White. That way the Government can inflate the numbers for white crime to help mask the problem of who really creates the most havoc in this country.

also, officers are trained to solicit info from people in this situation by pretending to be their advocate/buddy/pal.

on the flip side, officers involved in shootings are typically afforded 24-48 hours of paid time off BEFORE having to answer questions from internal affairs.

The following gives a completely different account of what happened. Apparently she didn’t shoot him while he was making off with the child, she shot him in the leg when he came behind the counter after her.

Then when she ran outside to get help, he grabbed the 1-year-old and attempted to make off with the baby, then gave up and attempted to leave. At that point he was tackled and probably lost a lot of blood. He appears to have died after reaching the hospital.

http://www.tri-cityherald.com/2011/10/19/1684803/clerk-kills-would-be-robber-who.html

“A convenience store manager grabbed a gun from under the counter and shot a would-be robber in the knee before the man scooped up the clerk’s infant daughter and tried to flee, sheriff’s deputies said Wednesday.”

“Daniel Ramont Hernandez, 32, died at hospital after the Tuesday afternoon shooting at Del’s 24-Hour Food Store in Naples, according to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. The child wasn’t hurt.”

“Hernandez came in store acting erratically, causing 22-year-old manager Elizabeth Easterly to be worried for her safety, according to the sheriff’s office. When Hernandez came around to her side of the counter, she grabbed a gun and shot him once in the leg.”
