In fifth debate, Perry Finally shows up
The Washington Examiner ^ | 10/19/11 | Byron York

In previous debates, the adviser explained, Perry had tried to abide by time limits, leading some observers to say he seemed passive and withdrawn. Perry intended to make sure that didn't happen in Las Vegas.

It didn't. The Las Vegas debate was Perry's fifth, but the first one in which Perry really showed up to play. That doesn't mean he won, doesn't mean he was particularly likable, doesn't mean he always had cogent answers. But it does mean that Perry, on the verge of being completely written off as a candidate, gave himself a chance to get back in the game.

And Perry, for the first time in any GOP debate, rattled former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. He did it by bringing up a 2007 charge that Romney hired illegal immigrants to do lawn work at his Massachusetts home. Jobs are the magnet for illegal immigrants, Perry said. "And Mitt, you lose all of your standing, from my perspective, because you hired illegals in your home and you knew about it for a year. And the idea that you stand here before us and talk about that you're strong on immigration is on its face the height of hypocrisy."

Romney tried to laugh it off and to deny the story. "I don't think I've ever hired an illegal in my life," he said. Romney tried to explain, but Perry kept pushing, leaving Romney protesting that Perry was ignoring the rules -- just as Perry had planned.

"I'm speaking," Romney said. "I'm speaking, I'm speaking, I'm speaking. You get 30 seconds. This is the way the rules work here…Anderson?"

By the time Romney appealed to CNN moderator Anderson Cooper for help, Romney seemed flustered, almost frantic. "Would you please wait?" he said to Perry. "Are you just going to keep talking?"

I do not recall Obama’s debate performances but I know he can’t give a speech without a teleprompter.

Perry is the one who is showing Romney to be a flip flopper—no one else is bothering.

Did I read that PPP poll from Texas correctly? Did Perry only pull 5 percent in that poll?

He’s dead Jim. Time to move along and fall in line behind Cain or Newt.

Perry has been atrocious (and occaisonally insulting) on immigration so far

Actually, Perry's stance on illegal immigration is quite good, if one is willing to look objectively at his record. Perry's "heartless" statement was as stupid as Cain's flip flopping on putting alligators in the Rio Grande and electrifying the fence and then saying that, too was a joke. We don't know when to take Cain seriously.

Perry has bought himself a second chance. Now perhaps he can prove what he claims by calling a new special session and passing the Sanctuary Cities ban.

We have an economy that needs to be rescued. Perry has put forth a plan that will go a long way toward getting the economy kick started.

Perry's energy policy will not only produce more oil, it will create jobs, the price of energy will come down and people will have more money in their pockets to spend which will stimulate the economy.

We've beaten the issue of illegal immigration to death and Perry did call for a special session to deal with sanctuary cities. Let the people of TX deal with this. We have a country to save from Obama and the RATS.

“Cain has not laid a hand on Romney. Why?”

Because there is no need.

Romney is Cain’s biggest threat yet he does nothing to stop Romney and you say there is no need for Cain to attack Romney? WHY?

Romney has stopped Romney. The man can’t get out of the mid 20’s in any poll. Herman has risen to the top being the “nice guy” and showing a positive attitude.

Why risk that support by going after someone that you don’t need to go after because A) you are beating them and B) they are not a threat as they have hit their ceiling.

Besides, Perry went hard after Romney (when Perry was still in the lead) and look at him now. What, you think Cain wants to trade Perry places?

If you are assuming that Cain has to do nothing to coast to this nomination, you are mistaken. He can go down in the polls just like Perry and with Cain’s flip flopping, I am going to predict that will happen.

I just heard on the news that Romney is in Iowa today and the clip they played of him, it was a good clip.

Where is Cain?

This thing is a long ways from being settled.

Cain can go down in the polls, sure. I am saying that Romney can’t go UP in the polls.

Where is Cain? Where is Perry? Where is Gingrich?

I don’t answer for the campaigns. I also know that there is plenty of time until Iowa and South Carolina caucus/vote so calm down. It’s not like you care about the Cain campaign anyway.

You have to be kidding. I wouldn't want you as my campaign manager if I were running for office.

I'll tell you what I do care about. I care about defeating Obama and your attitude about Cain's campaign is frighteningly like Cain's attitude. He doesn't have to work for it, he can simply coast to victory.

He has lost staffers because of his lackadaisical attitude so you are the perfect fit for Cain.

Say what you want about Herman Cain. I am not trying to convince you to vote for him.

And you cannot convince me to vote for Perry.

So all that is left is vile attacks upon one another or our candidates.

I refuse to participate any longer.

” If you are assuming that Cain has to do nothing to coast to this nomination, you are mistaken ..”

Last night on CNN, Cain apparently became pro choice .
He’s starting to flip more than Mitt.
Maybe they can form an acrobatic team.
On abortion he told Piers Morgan :

“The government shouldn’t be trying to tell people everything to do, especially when it comes to a social decision
that they need to make,” Cain said.

“It gets down to that family,” he said. “And whatever they decide, they decide. I shouldn’t try to tell them what decision to make for such a sensitive decision.”

Apparently, Santorum is expected to go after Cain on his muddled abortion stance today.
