Looks interesting. The USCCB was long one of the country’s leading air-headed, well-off and comfy leftist organizations, although I think that’s beginning to change a bit now. Not fast enough, of course.

To many of these guys are John Ryan Democrats. They could not see the handwriting on the wall when the majority of Catholics voted for Reagan. Whatever cover they may throw over Bernardin and his ilk, his influence was ruinous. He and the other members of the pink Mafia.

JFK and his 1960 Pontius Pilate speech to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association (All for votes) helped lead Catholics down the “What I believe privately is different from what I say and do publicly” BS path.

We see and hear this attitude from our so-called Catholic politicians today (Pelosi, Reid, Sebellius, Ted Kennedy, etc...)

Yeah, I’ve given a dozen of the DVD’s to friends. The most distressing thing about all this is the sleaziness of the bishops’ response to the criticism.

First, CCHD was caught coordinating web site obfuscation with the Center for Community Change when that group’s pro-death agenda was revealed. ( http://www.all.org/article/index/id/NTI0MQ/ )

Bishop Morin’s initial reaction to the charges against CCHD was: “Personally I think (the claims) are totally ridiculous.” If the claims were so ridiculous, why was so much time and effort wasted on the Zubik Study, and why have roughly half of the offending groups been defunded in the last year?

Concerning the Zubik Study, the following passage is illustrative of the above-mentioned arrogance:
“From its first days, there have been some criticisms about CCHD’s goals, guidelines and grantees. This criticism has become more visible with the wider use of internet communication and as polarization has increased in society and in the Church. CCHD takes any alleged violation of Catholic principles and CCHD policies very seriously. CCHD deeply regrets that in this past year five groups (out of 270) violated CCHD requirements and lost all CCHD funding because they acted in conflict with Catholic teaching. We apologize for the violations of CCHD policies by these groups and for the damage and confusion they have caused. This Review and Renewal is putting in place stronger policies and clearer mechanisms to screen and monitor grants and groups to ensure that these past violations, though very limited, are not repeated.” EMPHASIS ADDED

Tellingly, this statement first downplays the scandal by blaming the internet and polarization. Then it suggests that because only 5 out of 270 groups were defunded (up to that time), only 5 groups were problematic. As indicated earlier, the number was close to 70.

Also concerning the Zubik Study, we must mention that it cited as a shining example an organization, Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), which violates the study’s own directives concerning coalitions. For example, CIW is listed as a member of the Grassroots Global Justice Alliance which, in a 2005 briefing document, clearly opposes (as “right-wing”) Church teaching concerning homosexuality and “women’s rights.” (Follow GGJBriefingPaperFall05.doc link at http://www.ggjalliance.org/node/134 )

As another example of CCHD’s deceptiveness and arrogance, USCCB removed the list of 2009 CCHD grants from its website and it didn’t publish a list of 2010 grants until February 11, 2011.

Sadly, USCCB proceeded with the November, 2010 CCHD collection despite its unwillingness to reveal the list of 2010 grantees. As mentioned above, we now know that about half of the problematic groups continue to be funded on a national basis, more problematic groups have been added, and it appears that local diocese CCHD grants to problematic groups continue largely unabated. In Chicago, for example, an Archdiocese CCHD director who was attempting to make reforms was “let go” amid pressure from anti-reform priests. According to Father Larry Dowling, the leader of the anti-reform group: “It has been an insult to many (grantees) to be asked ‘Does your organization support abortion or same-sex marriage’?” (http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/archive/ldn/2010/nov/10111201 ) Meanwhile, Chicago CCHD grants continue to go to organizations such as Chicago Workers Collaborative, which has links to numerous socialist organizations and is headed by a former propagandist for the Communist Sandinistas in Nicaragua. This raises one final issue concerning the future of CCHD. It is apparent that the USCCB has become a harbor and training ground for liberal political operatives. John Carr and Tom Chabolla, for example, both served on the board of Center for Community Change while holding high-ranking positions in CCHD. Mr. Carr remains at CCHD, preaching the “religion” of global warming and carbon taxes in the U.S. Senate. (http://www.nccbuscc.org/sdwp/ejp/climate/June07FinalTestimony.pdf ) More recently, it was revealed that Ralph McCloud (current head of CCHD) served as treasurer for the political campaign of a radically pro-abortion Congressional candidate while heading CCHD.
