Ummm....

read my post 5.

Aspirin IS a natural substance.

But then, so are amanita mushrooms. The whole “natural” kick is kinda whiffle-ball, if you ask me.

I’ve got at least three “natural” plants growing in my yard that would kill you one hell of a lot quicker than any aspirin will.

We respond to a lot of people who are prescribed aspirin to take daily. They are almost always on a very low dose something like a single chewable 81mg “baby aspirin”. Low dosage aspirin taken everyday is thought to reduce the chance of heart attack and stroke by approximately 20%. There are many people who should not take aspirin everyday so you should check with your doctor before starting such a regimen.

My Grandfather died from cancer while doing that...

It didn't say it prevents cancer. It cuts the risk.

Correct. If you die from a stroke, you have a lesser risk of getting cancer.

There are TWO main types of stroke: those caused by blood clots and those cause by bleeding. Any blood thinner decreases the chances of the former and increases the chances of the latter. Blood thinners also decrease blood clots that cause heart attacks.

Aspirin is so cheap to make and margins so low and competition so fierce, it will not budge the profits. And of course, it is almost all made overseas in places like China.

Olive oil is a monounsaturated oil, not a polyunsaturated oil. Olive oil is neutral...it should not be heated, we should not cook with it. It is great for salads, bread dip etc. Olive oil oxidizes when heated. When you do use olive oil, it should be extra virgin, cold pressed...find one you like.

“Aspirin can lead to strokes, and also liver damage.”

Aspirin is relatively gentle on the liver. Tylenol kills livers...responsible for the need of many liver transplants. Excessive use of aspirin can lead to tinnitus.

That said, I myself minimise the use of aspirin, though it may be the least hazardous of the pain killers.

As for stroke, intracerebral haemorrhagic stroke - a type of stroke caused by bleeding in the brain may be caused by ‘blood thinners’ such as aspirin or warfarin (coumadin).

It has often been said, and it's probably true: if aspirin had been invented today, it would probably be available by prescription only. Its effects can quite powerful, for good and/or ill.

Everyone's doctors seem to see things differently. My doc has be take one low-dose aspirin (81 mg, equal to one-quarter of a regular aspirin -- hardly seems worth the trouble) a day, in addition to a prescription for high cholesterol. For occasional aches and pains, she specifies acetaminophen, but she warns of overdosing and its possible liver damage, especially since I enjoy adult beverages; fortunately, I rarely take it -- maybe 8 tablets a month, never more than 4 within 24 hours.

Some people, maybe even most, don’t understand the significance of this.

If big pharma came up with something that reduced the risk of cancer by 60%:

1) It would be heralded as the greatest medical discovery since penicillin
2) It would be available by prescription only
3) You would see commercials on tv every five minutes. Seriously.
4) It would be a new substance, with possible long term side effects that were as of yet undiscovered
5) As long as a patent exists, an effective dose would cost 10-25K per month.

A good friend of mine died from colon cancer. His chemo therapy drugs (that didn’t work) cost him 10,000 per month.

The error is that ulcers are caused by bacteria. Aspirin taken alone on an empty stomach might be a problem, but if taken with some food, the problem should be minimal.

Un mentioned is the real, proven benefit of prophylactic aspirin...... elimination of heart attack and stroke. A reduction in the probability of cancer is just icing.

I have taken doctor prescribed 1 each 325 mg tablet daily for many years with no ill effects

Also, until recently I carried two tablets in a small metal box for taking immediately on heart attack or stroke symptoms. The little box is a heart attack first aid kit. Never leave home with out it.

(I lost my other one, carried for years. This thread will motivate me to make a new one).

Yup. Another benefit of a drug that couldn’t get FDA approval if it had been discovered in the last 20 years.

“Aspirin IS a natural substance.”

Willow bark is a natural substance.

Long-term use has been associated with macular degeneration and other problems.
There are other natural substances that are effective on systemic inflammation
and have no long-term complications.

Curcumin would be one example of such a natural substance. There are others.
