The Turks have a modern history (post WW1) of being duplicitous back-stabbers who act only in their perceived short term self interest.

They were Hitler's number one trading partner until February 1945. At that point they declared war on Germany in order to qualify for charter member status in the UN.

In 1950 they needed NATO/US help against their aggressive northern neighbor and sacrificed a brigade in Korea to buy it.

In 2003, no longer needing the US to support them against the USSR, and desirous of gaining EU admittance they sided with Germany and France by blocking transit of our 4ID into Iraq at the very last minute.

Turkey cannot be trusted.

Sorta like giving Tomcats to Iran just before the revolution.

What world govt really can be trusted? Aren’t they supposed to operate for their own benefit? Do you think all the other countries trust us?

This is just the camel’s nose under the tent.

What is more natural than for Obama to increase support for Turkey’s muslims as they grow more militant every day?

This is probably his way of encouraging them to stay on the path to the new militant Islamic Caliphate.

By the time this fully develops we will see Turkey using US supplied weapons to kill Israelis and Iraqis.

Of course not but the Turks have a recent history of sticking us in the back, unlike the Brits for example.

IMO, if it were to develop that a ME caliphate were to start to take shape (increasingly more likely since the "Arab spring") then the Turks would be leading the charge against the West....so why give them a single bullet?

How about providing the choppers but equip them with a hidden cut-off chip to shut down the electrical system which we can activate when necessary. Same should be provided on all aircraft and weapon systems sold to “friendly” countries that may not be so friendly.
A similar chip was implanted in some radar systems sold to Iraq just prior to 1991. They proved very useful during Desert Storm.

Turkey has been trending Islamist for more than a decade. It denied our requests in the war in Iraq. Its actions have seemed so counter-productive that the European Union has basically frozen Ankara out of discussions political and military. In reality, the Turkish government is no friend of the United States, but that matters little in present-day Washington.

We seem to give bullets to lots of countries, even those that oppose each other. I guess the reasoning is to generate revenue for the defense companies. If we didn’t sell weapons systems to lots of people, then there would be more unemployment, wouldn’t there?

Perhaps they have done that? I doubt it would be made public.

Of course.

But the odds are greatly in your favor when you are betting that Obama will show favoritism to muslims and that militant muslims will become more militant and slaughter more people.

The T-129 is not slated for entry into service for at least an year (optimistic estimate)...they can put the Supercobra in service within weeks given commonality of equipment.

This is just more of this adminstrations idiocy... The only reason Turkey would want these would be to attack N Iraq.. Causing even more instability in the Middle East than his foolish actions in Libya and Egypt.

I don’t condone the Cross Border attacks coming into Turkey from Iraq, but those attacks are not state sanctions and Turkey has violated the border in response to them repeatedly. Giving them these to just escalate things is insane.

However Romper Room is beyond foolish, so who knows.

Transfer current assets as opposed to selling export versions? is this a move to export some NOFORN technology under the guise of an “emergency?”
