Obama Administration Wants to Give Turkey SuperCobras

An unorthodox deal sees Washington providing Ankara with in-service US Marine Corps attack helicopters to aid in its war with the PKK.

The Obama administration wants to provide two currently in-service US Marine Corps attack helicopters, Reuters reported Friday.

The highly unorthodox move is being considered as Ankara seeks to exact revenge for a major attack by Kurdish separatists.

Turkey has been seeking AH-1 SuperCobra helicopters to replace those lost fighting separatist rebels from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) for some time.

Congressional officials say the Marines would get two new Textron Inc Bell AH-1Z SuperCobras to replace thee in-service AH-1W aircraft to be provided to Ankara.

The AH-1W sold previously $10 million. Turkey bought 10 of them in the 1990s. The larger, twin-engine AH-IZ may sell for about $30 million, according to industry sources.

But the administration’s plan has been held up by questions from lawmakers about the row between Turkey, which has shifted its sympathies towards Syria and Iran, and key-US ally Israel.

Under the US Arms Export Control Act the Congress must be notified at least 15 days prior to proceeding with any significant arms transfer to a NATO partner, which includes Turkey.

Turkey vowed "great revenge" and launched air and ground assaults on Kurdish guerillas in

Yeah, when they were basically a secular nation, and behaved, usually, as an ally should. That is no longer the case. They should be treated as any other muslime country.

Are we supposed to like or dislike Turkey. It gets confusing sometimes.

So, Obama is reluctant to sell fighters to Taiwan, but will sell gunships to Turkey?

I just don't get it.

Turkey snd Iran have a mutual agreement to wipe out the Kurds PERIOD. And they have been doing so for years. At this time, things are heating up for the Kurds in Iraq very negatively, especially since we will be gone soon. They have been ordered to get rid of all public displays of their flag, even on their own government buildings. Those who have refused have had the flags forcibly removed by Iraqi troops.
The Kurdish flag that was in front of the Iraqi government buiding to represent the Kurds elected to the Iraqi parliament has been taken down as well.
There is no way we should be ugrading Turkey’s weapons. NONE. There is going to be a genocide over there when we leave.

(Just noted the really interesting naming of the two helicopters ...the AH-1 cobra, and the Mangusta, or Mongoose, in English - and aren't mongooses supposed to be cobra killers?) Anyways, if Turkey has decided to develop the T-129, which is based on the very capable A-129 Mangusta by Italy, why would they want/need additional SuperCobras? What am I missing here?

Mangusta:

That’s not a super cobra. It’s an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter.
