For $1000, a 2 gallon cylinder added to Lexus so that the car now runs on both natural gas and gasoline. Can switch fuel from the dashboard.

For 7 gallon tank - $1600.

Each gallon of natural gas is about $1.29.

Is this EPA-approved? I suspect not.

The reason there aren’t more solutions like this isn’t because the technology isn’t there - it’s because onerous government regulations make approval expensive and difficult.

You can make up a LPG system for not much money, but if you want to sell it, you have to get regulatory approval (by vehicle, IIRC, no universal kits allowed) and it has to be put on by licensed installers, IIRC, boosting the eventual price by several times what it cost to actually make the thing.

about 40 yrs ago my dad converted a ‘65 Rambler American to propane. It had a flathead Continental engine, same as the forklifts in his shop...was simple to swap the carburator out.propane to natural gas is just a different sized injector.

Some things to remember: A converted or LPG assisted vehicle MUST display at all times the LPG sticker on the front and back bumpers.

LPG vehicles are forbidden from many secure areas - that can include bridges, military bases without the DOD sticker, airports, etc.

And I don’t know about others, but LPG runs about $3 a gallon around me - I’d save little if any for converting to LPG. Those areas where LPG is cheap, you’ll probably do just fine.

$1.29 a gallon. Does this include road taxes? There are heavy fines in some placed for not paying roadtax. I don't think that I would want 7 gallons of high pressure gas in a car that I was driving. Propane has 85% of the energy per gallon as gas does but I don't know what natural gas is rated at. Would 7 gallons even make 100 miles?

Propane has 350 PSI working Pressure while natural gas is over 3600 psi. Not a simple or cheap change.

At least in Texas, compressed natural gas for use in road vehicles is EXEMPT from all fuel and highway taxes. But, your mileage per gallon is only about 75% of that of liquid gasoline. A 7 gallon tank is too small - maybe a 30 gallon one in the trunk would be good, though. If you also filled the regular tank with gasoline, you could drive a LONG ways! But the CNG tank can take several hours to fill.

I would love to run my car on natural gas. When we drilled a well in NC, we were told that they drill would probably hit pockets of natural gas as it happened to many others.

How can I convert my car to run only on natural gas?

Are there any natural gas stations?

I converted a Ford F-350 dual rear wheel mechanic’s truck to run propane or gas. Installed 40 or 60 gal tank for propane.
At the time my business had a duel user permit for my diesel trucks and heavy equipment. We had to file a report to the state monthly and pay the road use tax on the diesel and propane. the dual user permits were done away with several years ago. The state put out a listing yearly of all of the permit holders and the oldest one still active at that time was issued in 1938 and belonged to a friend of mines dad who was a fuel distributor.
