OWS Protesters in NY Battling Cold Weather With Bike-Powered Generators
CBS New York ^ | 10/30/2011 | CBS New York

Posted on 10/30/2011 6:52:12 PM PDT by imchris

This is hilarious. OWS protesters in New York are now thinking about using bike-powered generators to power their lights, cooking equipment, etc.

I wonder if any of the power-generating bikes can support Michael Moore's weight.

But the protesters are coming up with a new solution – a stationary bike and generator connected to a battery. “We’ve got five bike-powered generator systems that are coming from Boston and we’ve got five more plus other ones that are going to supplement as well so we’re completely, completely off the grid,” said demonstrator Lauren Minis.

Powerful enough to heat electric blankets? Who’s going to pedal all night?

I remember riding one of these at a science display one time. They have no idea how much work they are in for. When they are through they will have a whole new appreciation for "the grid." Idiots.

One of these geniuses will set his sleeping bag on fire and sue NYC for not protecting him. And no, if I was there I wouldn’t pass water on hi to put it out.

I had a live feed last night as the OWS people were talking about sneaking into Grand Central Station.

They are not as tuff as they act.

Thermal imaging in London show tents empty at night.

I grew up on the farm. Dad used a electric powered conveyor to carry the silage up and into the feedwagon.

He instilled in me an appreciation for how much labor-saving power can be conducted through a small electric cord.

Electricity makes big, mundane jobs an enjoyable snap.

Powering that generator, on the other hand...............well, they’re in for a surprise. Power in has to exceed power out.

They’ll be back to using coal before long.

Too sad really...these people are truly aimless, the hidden under current of our society. now in the spotlight...every family can claim one or two, but now they’ve gathered in various areas for all of us to see, and maybe recoil from, yet tolerate because what else can we do?

“coming from Boston”.

i.e. carbon is being added to the atmosphere to get them here.

The 53% pays.

We pay for them being there.

We pay for the LEOs to watch them.

We pay for cleanup.and the repairs.

We will pay to heal them.

Then we will pay for the expansion in government.

They've learned the pain of having to share with freeloaders - homeless and ex-cons... who want to take their food. That's been a lesson.

Appreciation of the gird works for me. And some of them have 'been mugged'... Who knows, maybe with enough lessons in reality - they'll be ready to join the Tea Party when this is over...

A few words of advice to the OWS crowd:

OCCUPY A JOB! OCCUPY RESPONSIBILITY! OCCUPY COMMON SENSE!

And if you want to protest, get your arses to the front of the White House and US Capitol.

http://www.kreuzotter.de/english/espeed.htm

I typically ride at a bit over 18 mph for a few hours a day weather permitting.

That works out to ~150 watts.

The generator may not be 100% efficient?

“We’ve got five bike-powered generator systems that are coming from Boston and we’ve got five more plus other ones that are going to supplement as well so we’re completely, completely off the grid,”

They are completely off the grid now. No lights, no heat. Plenty of snow.

I guestimate each bike could produce 150 watts...so the 6 of them would’t power one burner. The only people getting warm from this will be the ones pedalling.
