South Carolina sheriff urges women to carry guns
AP – 6 mins ago

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina sheriff is urging women to get concealed weapons permits and carry guns to protect themselves.

Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright made the suggestion Monday while discussing the arrest of a suspect in an attempted rape last weekend.

Wright suggests that women carry a .45-caliber weapon because he says they wouldn't have to be accurate, just close to the target.

I suggest a 9mm for a lady and work on being accurate. Less kickback and more potential rounds to throw at the attacker. My wife shot my .45 and hated it but she loves her Kahr PM9.

Good advice from the Sheriff, except for this: "...because he says they wouldn't have to be accurate, just close to the target." Just spray n' pray, Huh? TC

" And he said it's better to carry a gun than mace."

Sheriff Chuck Wright doesn't beat around the bush. He keeps it simple and to the point.

Dear Sheriff Wright,

Please move to Illinois asap and become our Governor.
We beg you.

Will you? Pretty please? All expenses will be paid.
Also, you and your family get to live free in a State owned Mansion.
Kindly consider that in deciding.

Thank you for you time.

regards
The (legally) UNARMED People of IL

No! He's my sheriff and you can't have him.

All kidding aside, I originally supported his predecessor, Bill Coffee - but I've been thinking for a while now that I may have been wrong in that.

LOL, that's okay.
Actually there are some Sheriffs like him here in IL. But they're 'down South'(1).

(1) Anywhere South of I-80 or 10 miles away from Joliet, IL in any direction :-)
And they're all hiding out from the professional pols, aka: crooks.

According to another article he suggested a specific weapon which I am not familiar with, but is a combo of .45 ACP and 410 gauge shotgun according to him, so the quote “Wright suggests that women carry a .45-caliber weapon because he says they wouldn’t have to be accurate, just close to the target.” is not accurate.

The 410 shotgun shell, of course, is the part where being close is more important than being accurate.

Very odd choice of a weapon for concealed carry, IMO.

a combo of .45 ACP and 410 gauge

3" Blue 2 1/2" Chamber Crimson Trace Grip
The "Taurus Judge®" is so named because of the number of judges who carry it into the courtroom for their protection. Capable of chambering both .410 2-1/2" shotshell and .45 Colt Ammunition, this amazing combo gun is ideal for short distances - where most altercations occur, or longer distances with the .45 Colt ammo. We have finely tuned the rifling to spread the shot pattern at close quarters or to guide the .45 cal. bullet to the target. Fully customized with fixed rear sights, fiber optic front sights and Taurus Ribber Grips®, the "Taurus Judge" is one decision-maker that lays down the law.

Back in the middle 60's there was a city in Central Florida where the police department armed 250 women with and trained them to use 5 round Charter Arms .38's. The rapist moved, rapes in that city went down and rapes in surrounding more politically correct communities went up.

Sorry, but I don't remember any more details, but I believe I read it in an old CATO report.

Yeah, that 0.05” radius increase is so much more forgiving than a tiny l’il 9mm.

Does a pistol that shoots shotgun shells count as a sawed-off shotgun?

Hi, Yeah, that’s it. I had in mind some kind of over/under thingy. So it can chamber either round?

Can’t say I like it much. I don’t even like the idea of alternating shot and slugs in a shotgun like some folks do. To my mind, it’s just one more thing to try and keep track of - what is the next round coming out of the weapon?

If I or a loved one was to carry that, I’d want it loaded with the 410 shells only.

“Does a pistol that shoots shotgun shells count as a sawed-off shotgun?”

The BATF says that as long as it has rifling, it is a common pistol. American Derringer asked the BATF to look into changing the law so that pistols could be made without rifling, but they woudn’t go for it. At all. A non starter.

The sheriff is a man who truly cares about people.
He needs to add “and train with them” though.

I’d love to see a society with lots of armed, trained private citizens and laws that make being a criminal really, really risky.

Does the rifling mean the shot spreads less?

(Not knowledgeable about guns here. You can tell.)
